Watch You Burn
Intoxicated
On "Watch You Burn," INTOXICATED plays a kind of thrash that is heavily steeped in the Florida death metal tradition. Erik Payne's raspy shouts are complimented perfectly by Gregg Roberts' death metal growls. The guitars are tuned a little bit lower than most thrash artists, giving them a bit more crunch. The production isn't squeaky clean, but it is well suited to the overall sound of the album. The songs are quick and to the point. You won't find any excessive noodling here. Every track slides in comfortably under the four-minute mark. "Watch You Burn" is completely free of fluff and filler. All you get are killer riffs, urgent vocals, and a whole lot of fun!
The first track, "Assholian Mode," starts off with a scream and a quick guitar flourish. The vocals are shouted in a raspy voice much like Matt Pike of HIGH ON FIRE. The drums are played at a tempo just below blast beat territory, and the song ends with a speedy frenzy.
The title track, "Watch You Burn," features driving guitars, nasty riffs, and just enough lead guitar antics to satisfy any thrash metal fan. At the one-minute and twenty-second mark, we are treated to an exceptional riff leading into a perfectly executed lead guitar solo.
The middle of the album is definitely a high point. The songs, "Majestic Ride," "Force Fed," and "Dumpster Dive," are a triple threat. "Majestic Ride" features the ever-present chugging guitar riffs, lightning-fast drums, and anti-establishment lyrics. "Force Fed" begins with a bellowing scream and includes the fastest drumming and largest vocal range on the entire album. The riffing on this one reminds me of the output of "Remission" era MASTODON. Rounding out the trifecta is my favorite of the songs, "Dumpster Dive." This piece has the best chugging riffs on the album. It is the most head-banging friendly track, and it also features a metal trope that gets me every time. I love when the music settles into a groove and the lead singer says "go" causing the band to go wild. I'm a sucker for stuff like that.
The tenth and final track is the aptly titled, "Inevitable End." This cut has the slowest guitar riffing. Every aspect of this song is delivered deliberately. An excellent old-school thrash riff comes in at two minutes and is revisited as the song fades out.
My only caveat when critiquing this album is that while every song is excellent in its own right, they all sound similar to each other. That kind of makes the album seem a little one-note. That is most definitely not a deal-breaker for me. Overall, "Watch You Burn" is a fantastic album. It would make a great soundtrack to any raucous heavy metal thrash party one might be planning.
