Unconquered Abysses
Into Coffin

INTO COFFIN is a Death/Black/Doom Metal band from Germany. "Unconquered Abysses," is their second full length album but they have also released an EP, a couple of splits, and a demo. Four tracks make up the album's nearly hour and a half running time—each one is like a different layer of hell. The first track, "Antediluvian Flames," has about twenty seven seconds of forsaken tones before J's thunderous performance riles up the blanket of acidic guitars from S.
The vocals start soon after and with all members throwing in their respective parts to the mix, all hell does indeed break loose. Although it was probably done on purpose, I do wish the vocals weren't so buried in the mix. Still, these are some of the more brutal vocals I've heard in Death/Doom this year and fit the music perfectly. Much like INCANTATION or ASPYX, the band's brand of Doom is intertwined with faster parts, often which come across influenced by Black Metal as much as they are by Death Metal. I'm glad for the varied tempo changes but it does present a problem when a track is so long—I really feel as if they needed to focus longer on some of the movements. But what they do, they do well and the song is all the more chaotic for it.
"Catacombal Echoes From ABZU," is a mouthful of a track title and a whopping 23 minutes in length. This track seems to be more focused on building the song around the riffs. To me, it sounded like the first riff was the bases for the rest of them, as if each one was born from that first blast of electric evil. Very effective and it kept the song from getting too boring across the minutes. Just because they are a form of Doom, doesn't mean they don't ignore immediacy. "Archetype For The Total Ruin," goes straight for the gut and doesn't let up until around the five and a half minute mark when a slow rolling riff just steamrolls over what has already been destroyed. The last quarter of the song is a highlight, due to the downright chaotic drums. Listening to the last thirteen minutes or so of the track with headphones makes your brain feel like it will cave in any second. Compliment, by the way.
For the first ten minutes, the final track "Unconquered Light of Nothingness," is the slowest paced on the album but it does speed up for a few minutes before falling back down the Doom rabbit hole. As such, this track represents the most of what this album is about. If you don't like this one, you won't like the other three tracks. I assume that any Metal band that sounds abrasive to non-Metal fans doesn't sound that way to the actual fans. However, I wouldn't be surprised if that isn't the case for INTO COFFIN. Simply put, this is sick music for sick people. Even as far as Death/Doom goes, this is unrelenting in its darkened fury and downright evil atmospheric that grips you like tendrils from a long lost Old God. There isn't any pretense or far out ideas here. "Unconquered Abysses," is an album that is designed to suffocate after leaving you buried alive under a ton of riffs, lighting fast drums, and frightening death growls that are as low as the hell from which they probably came.
