Sentient
Insurgent

These guys are a prog rock/metal band from Birmingham/West Midlands in England(United Kingdom). They are called INSURGENT and they consist of four members who all went to study music at college together in BIMM as they are all from Birmingham. They say they are all inspired by other bands including TESSERACT, THE AGONIST, TRIVIUM and ALTER BRIDGE.
In terms of their sound, taking their main influences into account as well. Their guitarist JOE ROWLEY said that the band "always chase that perfect blend between heavy rhythms, memorable, powerfully delivered vocal melodies and we feel that SENTIENT is the perfect collection of songs with which to present our sound to the world".
The EP starts off with "Zero-Sum" opening the EP with harmonic vocals by KATIE together with a heavy rock feel by guitar, bass & drums. But no doubt the progressive elements are there as each instrument. There is even time for vocals to shine through by themselves before all other instruments pounce simultaneously. Moving onto the next track which is "Counterpart" playing guitar or drums as the intro slowly builds a crescendo to that progressive sound. The pitch shifts with the electric guitar are clear and vary in rhythm too. There is but sublime bass heavy guitar bass heavy guitar hooks and words with female vocals.
"Dogma" provides the real progressive sound and vocals do stand out with clarity, volume and authority. Guitar interjects and sends the band into some mass hysteria. But have no fear the vocals bring everything back down and guide all the other instruments back into the fore. "Colours Bleed" comes with musical accenting on guitar but vocals really let itself go wild with style becoming more prominent in the mix. The guitar coupled with bass guitar provides that hardcore sound blended together with the progressive vocals shrieking at some point as well. But nevertheless we are directed into the next track.
"Eclipse" is more steady, pulling back in the heaviness but vocals do as before cut through the mix. Pelting as well with thunderous guitar melodies and bone-crushing drums to really wet the listeners appetite for complete devastation. "My Sentence Awaits" with a more alternative guitar approach with beautifully orchestrated vocal lines. There isn't as much accenting as in a previous track but comes through as the final hurdle for this four piece band. The contrast between melodic harmony and heavy thrusts of energy is very commendable.
The technical elements, powerful chords and ecstatic sound effects from the band is a joy to listen to. So there is the EP as it's six tracks altogether, certainly an impressive introduction to the band and what is to come hopefully if they plan to release a full length album. They recently did actually make an appearance at this year's Bloodstock Festival considering they have only been around for about 2 years, they are on track to making it big and who knows they could be playing near you, if they do, go and see them.
