Disease
Insistent
Grindcore band INSISTENT offer up their own brand of chaos and brutality with their 2021 release "Disease" - an album that is sure to cause some bloody noses and missing teeth in the mosh pit. The first song "Eyewashed" comes in fast and loud and ends almost as quickly as it began. The song is barely more than a minute long and seems to end without warning. Instantly, you're pulled into noisy mayhem with punishing drums and deep, guttural, demonic vocals. Because the song is so short, you're then thrust into "Last Farewell," another song just a little over a minute where the drums wreak havoc and your ears are pounded unforgivingly with commotion. I was relieved when the title track "Disease" began and I wasn't immediately pummeled, but there wasn't much of a break from the beating.
The fourth song "Bad Blood" you'll miss if you blink. It's only 46 seconds long and barely seems like a song at that length. They all begin to blend together due to all of them being so fast and the vocals being mostly the same throughout. I enjoyed when vocalist Jiří Vošahlík switched things up the few times he did and did some higher growls and some bleghs. I wished it had happened more often to break up the repetitiveness. "Traitor" is another song where you're not thrown into blast beats right away and actually get to enjoy the heaviness without the overwhelming fastness, but just for a short time. The uproarious drums and riffs return in no time.
The only song that is "normal" song length is the last one "Wolf Cult," which is just over four minutes. To me, it's also the best song on the album. They actually gave themselves time to do something with it and it's not straight blast beats and "let's see how fast we can play this." I felt like I could actually hear what was going on with the instruments and not just utter chaos. Almost all of the songs, at less than three minutes, are so short that there's hardly any substance to them and they seem to end suddenly. The entire album felt like a fever dream. For fans of the genre and those who enjoy tumultuous noise for the sake of noise, this will be a delight. For me, it just doesn't do it.
