INHALEMENT is a death metal project based out of Boston, Massachusetts that was formed back in 2013 (the band was then known as TOKE until 2018) and officially used their new name starting in 2018. They have released 2 Eps so far, this one being the latest. This was released back on July 17th 2020, under the moniker "Eternally Stoned" and it was distributed through the Horror Pain Gore Death Productions record label. As the band name may already indicate, the lyrical material of this project revolves around marijuana and its fun effects.
The opener "MJ Ultra" has some really bizarre vocal effects in the intro with some psychedelic sounds in the background. The song then almost immediately transitions into the old school sound that reminded me of the good old days of CARCASS or EXHUMED. There are some slower groovy riffs, mixed with some very nice doom parts and screaming/shrieking guitars. I also enjoyed the dual vocal styles with the guttural and visceral style combined with the much higher grindcore style. The blast beats also play a great role in the song with the mixture of that typical Swedish death metal drum tempo we have been accustomed to for 30 years. I enjoyed the dissonance in the guitar sound at the end of the track as well.
"Unsmokeable" is about as straight-forward as a death metal track can get. It is very intense in a YATTERING style (for those of you who remember that death/grind outfit). The vocals really go a lot lower in this song than the previous one (not quite as much as the absolutely crazy band CYOTOXIN, but very close). The violent nature of this song should have your attention for the 2+ minutes it lasts. Do you miss those pounding drums that you know will just go into a full-blown frenzy? Well look no further than "Drowning in Reclaim". This song filled with energy, pitch-harmonics and low-tone insanity has a lot of going on and even shows off some dirty bass lines that are not audible in the other songs. For those you who miss the old ENTOMBED or who were into the early days of GRAVE, you will love the blend of slow headbanging that brings us back to the yesteryear of 1990's death metal and the maelstrom of chaos in the guitars.
Last but not least, we have the closer which is also the title track "Eternally Stoned", a song that really embodies the spirit of classic death metal, that made it such a beloved genre 30 years ago. I have been a long-time fan of that CARCASS/EXHUMED sound and this song put a big smile on my face as you can tell these guys really appreciated that style and play it to perfection. Overall, even though this EP is under 15 minutes, it is a great glimpse into how newer bands can grasp the very soul of what made classic death metal so popular among metal enthusiasts. The band has a high level of skill on all instruments and really do an amazing job at conveying their passion for the genre.
