Cage
Infinite Spectrum
New York City's own INFINITE SPECTRUM have made some recent line-up changes since their 2016 release. From their webpage, "the band has been hard at work to complete its next album, "Cage," which is a full length, rock opera concept album featuring eight different vocalists, who each represent a different character in the story. Alien Lex lent his keyboard wizardry as a guest musician for the album, as well. The band has since recruited vocalist extraordinaire, Will Shaw to take the lead singer mantle."
"Welcome to CAGE" is the first song. Out of the gates, the rhythm is heavily cadenced, and keyboards sparkle in the background. The chorus is full of vocal harmonies, and the bass guitar dances to and fro. That lead guitar passage after the second chorus burns bright. "Faith and Science Collide" has a rougher riff as well as rougher harsh vocals, but the mix of harsh and clean before the chorus is interesting, and speaking of the chorus, it has nice melodies. The band also exercises some musicianship in this song. "Far Away" has a sweet opening melody with beautiful female vocals. Again, the vocals in the chorus are filled with harmonies.
"The Sky Beneath" is rich and full out of the gates, with bright melodies from both guitars, keyboards, and bass. But there are also some odd melodies that don't really connect with the main line. "An Unfamiliar Place" begins with a very chunky bass line, keyboards, and guitars. So far, the balance that the main has been able to maintain is quite good. This vocalist has some pipes, and he easily gets into a glass-shattering range. The song takes a few detours along the way, with some fantastic musicianship. The vocalist refers to an encounter they had 23 years ago. "Shapeshifter" is a heavier offering, with a tough riff and snarly vocals. The keys are steady and play nicely with the guitars and bass. As expected, this is also a darker song, and the leads are once again very nicely done.
"Strangers from the Sky" has clean guitars and clean vocals. This isn't the sound I might expect from the event. Perhaps they are looking forward to meeting the visitors from beyond. It does take a darker turn after the second chorus. "They Walk Among Us" is the point in the story when you realize this fact. The music is hasty, and excitable, and about what you might expect considering the title. This instrumental runs you through about every emotion that you might feel, and you will marvel at the tight passages. "Conclude the Investigation" ends the album. It wraps up the tale with a longer song that has plethora of different sounds. One thing that you could never accuse the band of is poor musicianship. Indeed, it's one of the best parts of the album.
Judging by the track list, I would surmise that the album is about the age old question of alien life existing in the universe. I have always maintained, when considering the age and size of the universe, that is a mathematical certainty. The band has very strong musicianship, and the songs are varied enough to engage the listener for the entire length of the album. The tale is also told with passion, and it fits with the music so well.
