Over two decades since their grand debut, IN VAIN triumphantly returns with their fifth masterpiece, “Solemn.” Undeniably, “Solemn” epitomizes the zenith of IN VAIN’s illustrious journey thus far. Seamlessly fusing elements from a diverse array of genres, the band's innovative and captivating compositions boast an enduring appeal. At the heart of their music lies a steadfast commitment to ingenious songwriting, infused with an unparalleled quality and originality. Songwriter Johnar comments: “Our new album “Solemn” is a triumphant manifestation of IN VAIN’s epic journey spanning over two decades! This powerhouse of a record encapsulates our legendary past, while also venturing down fresh, uncharted paths. Clocking in at one hour, it offers plenty to dig into and we're beyond stoked with the final outcome.”

“Shadows Flap Their Black Wings” is the first song. Out of the gate comes a raucous and energetic riff with rich and deep harsh vocals. The melody and cleans in the chorus add some texture to the sound. “To the Gallows” is more aggressive, as the vocals switch from gutturals to screams, but the clean vocals wash over the filth quite well, and the balance the band is able to maintain so far is strong. Just when the harsh elements begin an avalanche of heaviness, delicate melodies temper the storm. “Season of Unrest” begins with a slow and steady helping of bass guitar, and this time, the melodies are interwoven into the harsh vocals. It’s like being guided by a bright beacon during a maelstrom. That interlude at the half-way mark is one of the most gorgeous that I have heard this year so far.

“At the Going Down of the Sun” has a very strong backbone that is augmented with lighter symphonic elements, but it is not until the chorus when some melody escapes through the tight structure of the song. “Where the Winds Meet” might have the greatest contrast as any song on the album. The weighted and aggressive passages are very ardent, but the melody breaks through them like a runaway train busting through the barricade that was meant to stop it. The two styles meet in the chorus, with a monumental outcome. “Beyond the Pale” is straight up brutal and heavy at first, thick with harsh vocals, but again, cleans elevate the song into the heavens. The lead guitar runs are fantastic as well, and they hug the melody line closely.

“Blood Makes the Grass Grow” is a shorter and more concise sound that blends both extremes into the music. Like a hearty stew, each bite is gratifying. The clean vocal harmonies actually gave me goosebumps. “Eternal Waves” has a climbing melody that builds through the darkness like one comforting wave after another. Impeccably bright spots here include the chorus, and the ethereal interlude, with moving bass guitar parts. “Watch for Me on the Mountain” closes the album. It’s entirely clean, with wonderful vocal harmonies, and the ardent qualities of the music are as strong as ever.
