Buried Giant

In A Forest Dark

This album was a good combination of the depressive qualities of Doom with the vile hatred of Black Metal. Harrowing elements were also sprinkled in to give the album a dangerous edge.

“Buried Giant” is a conceptual album, drawing inspiration from Kazuo Ishiguro's novel, 'The Buried Giant.' The album's lyrics poignantly delve into themes of memory loss, the disintegration of the individual as a living entity, the profound awareness of this degenerative process, and the relentless struggle for self-preservation. As the moment arrives, it signifies the defeat of the mind, a journey into death, even though the body endures. It's akin to a dormant seed, silently awaiting the summons of its own ashes.

The title track is first. It eases in, with atmosphere, and clean guitars. A solemn feeling fills the air, like the first snowfall of winter. Harsher tones follow…distorted guitar, drums, and harsh, evil vocals. Spoken word augments the sound, which has now become dissonant, and then it fades out gently in the end. “Where my heart went” has a dejected sound, and his heart went “to fade and die” he states stoically. Spoken word and harsh vocals share the stage, each trying to stamp out the other, but the creepy voice wins. The entire sound has a Gothic quality to it.

“A Vision in the fog” has a strong sense of the macabre, with a full on harrowing sound. They do some exploration in the song as well, in and out of consciousness, almost like a dream that you didn’t realize you drifted off in. “A coin to the boatman” is a short two-and-a-half-minute atmospheric piece. Of course, the coin is offered to Charon, for safe passage across the river Styx. “Forever alone” closes the album, and it drips with depressive and desperate tones, and they are stamped at every turn with hard, angled accents. Anger comes in towards the end, but it is washed away with depression.

Overall, this album was a good combination of the depressive qualities of Doom with the vile hatred of Black Metal. Harrowing elements were also sprinkled in to give the album a dangerous edge.
