Illusionary - Baku album cover

From their Presskit, "Hailing from the wonderful location of Brisbane, Australia come an aggressive up and comer in the metal realm. They go by ILLUSIONARY and they mean business. The band's current line-up was formed in 2019 as a four piece. The band is home to a multicultural outlook, and provides a fresh take on the genre. Illusionary builds its momentum off clever groove mixed with energetic build up and impressive vocals. This is their debut album, and it contains six songs.

"Lucid Dream" is the first. The sound is very weighted and aggressive, from harsh vocals and Djent rhythms with heavy accents. There are short snippets of clean vocals, but they don't last very long. The interlude following the second verse is ambient and tense, and offers a bit of diversity. "Vigoroot" begins with heavy and meaty bass notes, and back are the harsh vocals. The band has a thick mid-section as well. This interlude is a bit on the groovy side, followed by another aggressive guitar passage, and the band mixes up their approach. "Empty Vessel" is the third uncompromising song in a row, and the band shows no signs of slowing down. The rhythms they build are sophisticated.

"Doubletalk" begins with a darker sound and some spoken words, but the intensity is still quite strong. It's then back to spoken words before the punishing sound returns with all the vigor of a serial killer on a spree. "Pierce the Membrane" is another brutal and weighted sound of anger that well surpasses rage. The band adeptly changes rhythms in the background to keep the listener on their toes. The spring to the end is speedier and perhaps even more intense. "When the Sun Consumes the Moon" closes the album. You are given just a bit of reprieve in the beginning until the hateful sound blasts out your ears once again. The breakdown following the spoken section is deadly.

If you are going to go balls-out, you might as well leave nothing behind, and that is what ILLUSIONARY did. The don't mince words, or compromise their music at all. Even for it being six tracks of brutal, punishing music, there is enough other elements going on to keep the music interesting. I would keep my eye on this band, as they are poised to make a run at the giants in the industry.
