Drivende i Dødens Æter
Í Myrkri
I MYRKRI is a cold, harsh Atmospheric Black Metal based in Aalborg, Denmark, formed in 2019 by dark artist and Illustrator Simon Gardarsson, along with vocalist Lane Chaplin (ARMORER). Their debut was released in 2019, and now they are back with "Drivende i Dødens Æter," which translates to "drifting in the ether of death." The album contains five tracks.
"Vinterens Hedengangen" leads off the album. It opens with cold winds blowing along with some atmosphere in the background, and eerie key notes. It leads to a full-on Black Metal sound, with vile screams, muted production, and that "wall" of guitars and drums. "En Baesvergelse af Frygt" is more of the same. I am not getting much in the way of atmospheric Metal here. Cold and harsh...absolutely. But with little variation. The harrowing sound stays omnipresent throughout. "Tidens Onde" is similar in pacing and sound as well. You are not going to get much variation here if that's what you are looking for. Even the guitar pattern is eerily similar, and the vocals amount to just indistinguishable screams.
"Evighedens Andavaesen" opens with low and slow guitars and some somber notes, but it turns into that wall of sound pretty quickly thereafter. The drums fuel the steady pace, pulsing over and over. "En Baesvergelse af Frygt" closes the album, with again a similar sound. I really don't understand the need to make five nearly indistinguishable songs and call it an album. I understand many Black Metal bands are staying true to the origins by creating what was in the FWOBM, but nearly 30 years later, it's time to shake up the genre a little bit.
