Hailing from Chicago, Illinois, USA, HUNTSMEN play Sludge/Doom/Post-Metal. From their Bandcamp page, "while storytelling has been - and remains - at the core of all that HUNTSMEN is, they continue to dissolve the boundaries between metal and the more traditional modes of folk and country. The new EP here contains just three songs.

"The Dying Pines" opens the album. It's a very short, under-three-minute song, with acoustic guitar strums and clean female vocals. There is something very familiar about this folky sound, but I can't quite place it. It's like a ritual experience of longing to die somewhere where you are known, or it could be a unique place that you have never been to before. Either way, it makes your heart ache. "Let the Buried Lie Forgotten" is a much longer song, that opens with some dissonant tones. A few minutes in, the main riff is established. It's a heavy affair but the vocals are light and airy. The sound exists somewhere inside the boundaries of Metal music, but outside of most conventions within the genre.

"Carry On" brings the short EP to a close...a CROSBY, STILLS and NASH cover. Their take is interesting...beginning with clean guitars and some strong vocal harmonies, the message is "go your own way and live your own life." It isn't until the distorted riff that hits before the half-way mark that you know you are listening to an amalgam of Metal. The bluesy undertones combine with some psychedelic elements to create an original listening experience. Towards the end, heavier, dissonant tones develop, before ending with a thud. Only three songs? Oh well, that was just enough to peak my interest in this band, who combine several genres with ease and confidence. Even this hardened Metalhead can appreciate the softer and more fluid sounds on the album...they don't need to be in your face to get their point across.
