Sounds Of Eerie (Reissue)

Horror Of Horrors

The Old School Death Metal that is being played by HORROR OF HORRORS on "Sounds Of Eerie" is straight forward no-nonsense music without strange breaks, difficult rhythms or weird sounds.

Sounds Of Eerie” is actually the debut album of Old School Death Metal musicians HORROR OF HORRORS, a band that came from Silver Spring, Maryland, USA. They came together in 1994 and in the same year the presented us with their first attempt of world domination. They released one more album (“Fangs, Breaking The Skin” in 1996) before disbanding and another one (“Blood Of The Suspicious” in 1997) after pulling the plug on the band. Then, out of the blue there was a compilation album in 2011 named “Blood, Fangs and Foulness: The Complete Cursed Chronicles”. And on top of that they released “Rust, Flesh and Dust” in 2017, which was another total surprise. And now in 2025 the debut album “Sounds Of Eerie” as well as the latest album “Rust, Flesh and Dust” are being re-released by VIC Records. And to make it even more interesting; “Fangs, Breaking The Skin” should be released by now as well, by the same record company.

As far as “Sounds Of Eerie” is concerned, it becomes very clear from the very start that we are dealing with a self-produced product. The sound is rather poor, quite dull and frankly just a tad understated. That doesn’t mean that you are not able to listen to the album and enjoy the Old School Death Metal that is being played by HORROR OF HORRORS. It is straight forward no-nonsense music without strange breaks, difficult rhythms or weird sounds. No, this is as straight as an arrow. And with a playing time of 34:45 minutes it is exactly long enough to make your decision whether you like what you are hearing. And I have to admit I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to “Sounds Of Eerie” , as I recognise that if this is how HORROR OF HORRORS within the first year of starting the band, they definitely had something going on.

Don’t get me wrong, “Sounds Of Eerie” isn’t a brilliant of exciting record as such, but by listening to how a band starts off often gives you an inkling to what they might be capable of in the future. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always materialise in the way a band would like. But neither has HORROR OF HORRORS released a bad debut album, just one that didn’t stand out in the crowd. If they had more success with their latest offering “Rust, Flesh and Dust” is something you will have to find out by reading that review as well. But I feel the ratings I give will tell you that straight away.
