High spirits, high hopes...The young band from Chicago makes its first steps in discography by recording the first album under the veil of High Roller Records. The production is really good and descent and gives a vintage feeling which fits absolutely to the old school Metal sound of the boys. If bands like IRON MAIDEN and JUDAS PRIEST are really your cup of tea, then High Spirits will remind you the first golden days of Iron Maiden and Rocka Rolla correspondingly.
The homonymous LP contains 10 original tracks, taken from the early 80s with MAIDEN-esque twin guitar melodies. There are fast and furious riffs, nice-played Metal themes just like a back to the future album. Maybe it sounds a little bit repetitive between the songs or it reminds some of NWOBHM's successes, but as HIGH SPIRITS say at their myspace home page, we are always practicing and learning, and also revising our songs trying to make them the absolute best; and this line is 100% true and honest.
The album opener Torture shows its teeth from the very beginning and it continues in the same pattern; Wanted Dead and Never Going Back have an aggressive character over the other songs (the bass is almost doing Lemmy's thing), but the most pleasant surprise for me in this record was Wings Of Fire/Don't Look Down because of the most characteristic riff of the album and the epic reading of the singer.
I know that you've already been bored of all the bands who keep repeating the old tunes - or you can't get another old school stuff for your ears. HIGH SPIRITS, though, is a good and optimistic effort for nowadays; so, you can trust your taste, when you put this on your stereo. Hail!
PS: I couldn't worm out the names of the band's line-up; they say that they reveal their secret in a live performance nearby. This entire hugger-mugger, who knows why...
