Henget - Beyond North Star album cover

From Bandcamp, "Guitarist Jesse J. Heikkinen and vocalist King Aleijster de Satan have teamed up for a mind-bending Progressive Black Metal project, HENGET. Drawing inspiration from the world of occult and the ways of ancient Shamanism, "Beyond North Star" depicts a violent hallucinatory journey to the depths of the mind and beyond with psychedelic and syncretistic outlook." The album has eight songs.

"Dive" is the first. Although it begins with an unusual riff, it descends into madness and chaos from there. Talk about violent, this song is capable of killing everyone within a few hundred miles of the epicenter. The Progressive elements are mostly some odd chord changes, and meter shifts. "I Am Them" is harder, and more aggressive. Some off rhythmic changes occur in the riffs, but it connects well with the outside sound. Even the backing elements work well with the sound. "Henkivallat" has a dangerous swing to it...the kind of song you can tap your feet to but probably more like bang your head to. There is an alternating pattern between groove and filth, and the filth is quite harrowing.

"The Great Spiral" is a thick song overgrown with things that are not native to this land. The sound has a skipping rhythm to it at times, if you were skipping in Hell that is. The piano notes in the background add another dimension to the sound. The slow down at the half-way mark is carefully calculated, and the sound comes roaring back. The title track is like a rocket ship blasting off to the stars. The engines fire and smoke comes pouring out as a deafening sound fills the air. Symphonic elements really augment the sound, and the accents are as heavy as meteors pounding the earth.

"Lovi" is slow, twisted torture, followed by a death. The jovial and swinging elements are a stark contrast with the angry Black Metal, but again, it just works, and that bluesy lead break seems to come from nowhere. "Nouse" has more slow, and tense tones, featuring a doleful sound from clean guitars. You keep waiting for the shoe to drop but it never does, holding tension at is highest peak. "The Chalice of Life and Death" closes the album. The tones are rough, tumbling, and close to all around chaos. But the chaos is tempered with a strong riff and deep vocals that cut like a large knife. Layers of sound increase as the song rolls on, coming to a heavy crescendo at the end.

Take a look at the album cover here to gain some insight into the sound. The bright colors and oddly formed creatures speak of things that are not of this earth. I am usually not a fan of contrived side bar groups, but this is an exception. The songwriting is intense, but calculated. At times, the songs are almost playful, in a wolf in sheep's clothing method. It's like watching in horror as a brightly dressed clown goes on a killing spree after dark.
