Let the Dead Not Lose Hope
Hellhaim
HELLHAIM is a Metal band from Poland, formed in 2009. This is their sophomore effort, and contains nine songs. "Axe to Grind" is the first. It sounds like straight up Metal to me, in the vein of MOTORHEAD...energetic songs with a simple riff and carried sustain. The vocals have a raspy edge to them but it's within the wheelhouse of NWOBHM. "Devlin" starts with a list of "unmentionables" in spoken word form, then transitions to a similar sound and pace. Mateusz can scream with the best of them, but it's unclear if he is using falsetto.
"Virus" is a bit of a slower grind, and still with that NWOBHM sound. They do have a good amount of energy however, in both the music and their presentation. "Zodiac" has some opening banter that is replaced by a mid-tempo and heavier riff. The riffs make some changes along the way however, keeping the listener on his toes. "Hell Is Coming" has some opening chaos followed by a burning pace and vocal screams. The drums are doing double-time through the chorus, which features a bit of melody. The solo is done on a classical scale even. "La Santa Muerte/The Triumph of Life" is a slower grind with more depressive sounds at its core. The vocals are smooth and easy at first, followed by some stranger sounds...grunts and the like.
The next two songs are inexplicably short..."Livet ar stunden" moves with a very fast and blistering pace. The vocals are mostly harsh and/or shouted, and there is an energetic guitar solo to boot. "Metro" closes the album. It's another rowdy and dirty affair covered in mud, and with an attitude. Overall, the band have created a highly energetic album and with their own personality. There is also enough attitude to push through barriers like a bully on a mission. Though fairly simple in scope, there is something to like here for all Metalheads...it's called a "fuck you" with a straight middle finger.
