Songs Of The Hungry Ghosts
Harmozel

Let me start this review by giving you a little bit of information. HARMOZEL was founded in 2019 and hail from Farmington, Connecticut, USA. After a long six years this one man band of Pat Jenkinson decided that it might be time that the world would be made able to enjoy the fruits of his labour after all this time. As HARMOZEL doesn't have a record deal, the thing to do is release the debut album "Songs Of The Hungry Ghosts" by himself. And what is very clear from the start is yes, this is Doom Metal. There is no way you can confuse this for anything else.
Okaaaaayyyyy, wow, damn, I wasn't expecting this. I knew that with HARMOZEL I was going to be reviewing a Doom Metal album, and musically the band is delivering just that, but I didn't expect the vocals on "Songs Of The Hungry Ghosts" to come straight out of the house of Jim Henson. Especially the lower end of the clean vocals could come from either Sesame Street or even The Muppet Show. At first I hoped it would stop there, but unfortunately the rest of the vocals aren't much better, with exception for the grunt. That is when the voice used actually makes sense. Unfortunately that isn't being used often enough. The other instrument that doesn't really work are the like a piano sounding keyboards, as that one comes out of it all as if they have been composed and played by a child, as they distract from the Doom Metal vibe instead of add to it.
The tunes on "Songs Of The Hungry Ghosts" can also hardly be called proper songs. They are like loose sand, blowing every way but the right one in order to make what is being offered sound cohesive. All through the album the artist just jumps from left to right, making it almost impossible for me as a listener to enjoy what I'm hearing, let alone trying to make sense of it when trying to type this review. I'm sorry, but for me Pat Jenkinson should have waited before releasing HARMOZEL and conferred with some other musicians, writers and arrangers before bringing us "Songs Of The Hungry Ghosts". Now listening to it is a simple act of masochism, so I'm going to stop right here, before I either erupt in laughter (again) over the vocals, or in despair because of the poor songs.
