Destination Extinction

This Grindcore/Grindgore album isn't only brutal, but funny as well.

Grindcore was born as an extreme fusion of Hardcore elements (as created by DISCHARGE with its D-Beat approach on the early 80s) with elements of Death Metal. Early pioneers are SIEGE and REPULSION, but NAPALM DEATH is the band that divided waters and canonized the genre with “Scum” and “From Enslavement to Obliteration”. It’s clear that from those days to now, things evolved a lot, but some bands like to start from the original ‘zero point’ to create their own path. It seems to be the case of the North American trio HAGGUS, as depicted on their fifth full-length, “Destination Extinction”.

Grindcore sonorities aren’t something that anyone can deal with, so the band delivered on the hands of Greg Wilkinson the responsibility of recording, mixing and mastering the songs. The final result is something that has a clear Hardcore orientation, harsh and extreme, but defined as well. And the artwork of Lucas Valtenbergs has a touch of irony, and a use of colors that isn’t usual for the genre, but that fits on the band’s music. Here is presented a form of Grincore mixed with clear Hardcore influences (as heard on “Lobotomized Compliance”) and using a Goregrind appeal sometimes (as the low-tuned death growls on some moments “Lobotomized Compliance” as well), and some touches à la MOTÖRHEAD are heard in some moments (as on “Do You Love Mincecore?”). This formula mixes old elements with new ones, creating a personal hybrid, with a chaotic energy and a handmade-like approach sometimes. But it’s truly very good, and most important of all: it's truly fun to hear it!

Different from usual Grindcore releases, the band shows only 10 songs (although the time lengths aren’t so long), and you must be ready to deal with jigsaws as “Rotting Off”, “Bound by Realms of Cruelty”, “What’s Fucking Left?”, “Lobotomized Compliance”, “Do You Love Mincecore?”, “Repulsive Institution”, “Crippled by Stupidity”, “As the Hammer Drops”, “Malignant Boomer” and “Grotesque Reflection”. If your heads don’t move as this album is playing, you’re dead! You don’t need to be a Grindcore fan to deal with “Destination Extinction”, but you must be looking for something fun to listen to. In this point, HAGGUS is the perfect band for you.
