Opera Medica

Haemorrhage

These Spanish Goregrind/Death Metal pioneers created a fine EP, indeed.
June 5, 2025

REPULSION, CARCASS, IMPETIGO, EXHUMED and some others helped to create and shape what is called by many as Goregrind (that is just a way of playing Grindcore with disgusting lyrics linked to gore, death, pathology and other themes that would make a coroner puke for hours). And many acts take such path, but using their own ideas to improve their music. One of these is the Spanish quintet HAEMORRHAGE, here causing disgust on the fans with the EP “Opera Medica”. As pioneers of Goregrind as the names written above (the band is active since 1991), the quintet unleashes a furious mix between Grindcore and Death Metal influences (especially from Swedish Death Metal School) with D-Beat touches and more.

It means that their music isn’t done in ‘one-single-breath’ kind of tempo (because they change from high speed to slower ones easily), and their music is filled with excellent extreme instrumental arrangements. Death growls and snarls, insane guitar riffs and insane solos, massive rhythms from bass guitar and drums form their combination to unleash tons of energy and massive hooks. It’s truly great! The sonority tries to keep things into a Grindcore/Death Metal way - in few words, the use of instrumental tunes is focused on classic raw tunes, but in an understandable way - and it means that anyone can understand clearly what’s being played. And the artwork for the cover is as sick as the lyrics, but obviously, it’s very good, indeed.

“Scalpel, Scissors...and Other Forensick Instruments”, “Polyclinic Abattoirs”, “Obstetric Phantom” and “Nomenclator Pathologicum” are songs that keep the old spirit of Goregrind alive, but filled with charming instrumental arrangements and very good tempo shifts (and tons of D-beat rhythms). And as a surprise, here is a version of the quintet for “Deathevokation”, a DISMEMBER song (released as a bonus track of the CD version of “Like an Ever Flowing Stream”), here in a sick and brutal version.

“Opera Medica” comes in a very good hour to show that HAEMORRHAGE is still alive; and the fans hope that a new full-length is coming this way as soon as possible.
