Hadron - Evil Lady album cover

HADRON is a Danish Doom Metal/Heavy Metal band formed in 2009. "Evil Lady" is the band's second full-length release and was issued on August 24, 2020 through Deadbangers Productions. This is a versatile four-piece band who sing in Danish and English. Modeled after one of their biggest influences, BLACK SABBATH, they have a single guitarist, bass player, drummer and vocalist.

Kicking off the record is the title track, "Evil Lady", a sludgy tune with a '70's Metal riff. This is definitely a throw back band. Fans of Ozzy era BLACK SABBATH will be salivating over this sound. Not a true copy, but a modern interpretation of the classic sound. One of the most notable differences is the vocal range used. Martin Pedersen uses a higher pitch than Ozzy in many spots, providing a distinct contrast.

"Out Of Mind" has a bit more of a groove feel than the old school doom right off the bat, but quickly settles in to the doom genre. Coming back to groove, the chorus is catchy, driving along before dropping back to doom. This ability to shift back and forth highlights the musicianship of the band. The ability to create complex compositions and shift from genre to genre is noticeable.

"Endeløs Ensomhed" is one of the songs in Danish. While I do not understand the lyrics, the song feels much like the rest of the album. Catchy riff, driving bass line, stable, hard hitting drum rhythm. This just further shows me that music is a universal language, no matter what language it is in. Whether it's NIGHTWISH singing in Finnish, BABYMETAL in Japanese or HADRON in Danish, I still love the musical aspect. I connect to the beat, even if not the lyrics.

I have to say though, my favorite song on the record is in English. "Solitude" is one of the harder driving songs. The riff just crushes you under its weight. I agree with the lyrics as well. When I need my space and need to be alone, I don't want to share my solitude with anyone. It doesn't matter who you are. I just need to be with me and no one else.

Overall, this is good record. The production is just a little rough, but it sounds intentional, like they wanted the songs to sound authentic to the era. HADRON do their influences proud, whether that is BLACK SABBATH, RAINBOW, or BUDGIE. And you know they do a good job of honoring their heroes if you can hear the direct influence in the music. As they say, "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery". Well done HADRON!
