Unhealthy Mechanisms

Go Ahead and Die

Overall, although the riff are punishing, and the vocals brutal, that’s about where the story begins and ends. Nothing about this album is exciting, amusing, or original.

"Unhealthy Mechanisms" is the caustic sophomore album from Arizona death-crusters GO AHEAD AND DIE. A torrential whirlwind born from the livid minds of Igor Amadeus Cavalera (HEALING MAGIC) and Max Cavalera (SOULFLY, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY). This new installment to the band's dystopian catalog is a fresh dive into the madness of society and the pollution that ravages our minds. From the first note, there is a sense of unhinged insanity; a grim rhythm that takes listeners down sinister alleyways and across ravaged soundscapes. Igor and Max supply crunching, frenetic guitar riffs and ear-splitting dive bombs in the no-holds-barred “fuck you" fashion of the Cavalera family.

“Desert Carnage” is first. To me, it sounds like a cross between Death Metal and Thrash Metal, especially in the vocals and guitar work, and the drums pound away in quad time. “Tumors” begins with a steady supply of feedback, and then the band falls into the trap of using too many open notes to fuel the sound. It’s an amateur mistake for a seasoned band. “Drug-O-Cop” is more of the same. The combination of Death Metal with a rapped vocal cadence is probably my least favorite style of Metal. So far, the album is not inventive at all.

“No Easy Way Out” moves quicker, but also has a similar sound. This is my biggest pet peeve when exploring a new band or album…when the songs all run together, and the riffs are old and rehashed. “M.D.A. (Most Dangerous Animal)” at least has some variation in terms of the spoken work story at the beginning, but it soon falls back into the same sound once again. “Cyber Slavery” has an even heavier sound, but again, all of the songs are blurring together at this point. “Blast Zone” has a little variation, mainly in the beginning, but then the same old sound emerges once again. This is painful.

The title track closes the album, and at this point, the band might has well just call the entire album one long song. Overall, although the riff are punishing, and the vocals brutal, that’s about where the story begins and ends. Nothing about this album is exciting, amusing, or original.
