Some people ask why some successful musicians have projects that are deeply different from each other. The answer is simple: no one can express all the ideas and influences on only one band. It's hard to change a musical personality of a band that has a commercial appeal, so another rises to be an escape route for other ideas. Maybe this is the driving force and the reason to exist of the trio GO AHEAD AND DIE, and their first album, "Go Ahead and Die" is really amazing.

On the band is a part of the Cavalera family: Igor Amadeus (from HEALING MAGIC and LODY KONG) and his father, Max (from SOULFLY and CAVALERA CONSPIRACY). With them is the drummer Zach Coleman (from BLACK CURSE, DOMINION, KHEMMIS, and DAGON). The music of the album can be something weird for those who knows Max's previous works, but for an old MetalHead as me, it's expected (because I know his music since 1986); a pure, blunt and nasty form of Thrash/Death Metal with clear influences from Hardcore from the 80's. Names as HELLHAMMER/CELTIC FROST, DISCHARGE, SLAYER and others from those days are clear influences presented on this album, but with the maturity and experience of the years hand in hand with a strong personality. To be honest, it can be seen as a great 'fuck you' in the face of many people, including conservative dictatorial believers. So be prepared, because the album is great!

In this way, the caption made by Charles Elliot (ABYSMAL DAWN's guitarist), and mixing of Arthur Rizk exalt the dirty and organic side of G.A.A.D.'s music. But for such nasty and brutal form of music, something clean and extremely defined, with endless digital editions, wouldn't work as good as this dirty and crude one.

This album is extremely great, but for the ones who need some songs to begin with, try "Truckload Full of Bodies" (a massive and 'hardcorized' song with a brutal weight, and a crushing work is done on bass guitar and drums), the dirty and oppressive "I.C.E. Cage" (an Old School Punk Rock/Hardcore song, with nasty and simple guitar riffs), the bitter and slow rhythm of "Isolated/Desolated" (the influence of HELLHAMMER and CELTIC FROST is clean on the riffs and on the contrasts between vocal tunes), the violent crush heard on "Punisher" (this one can cause earaches on many no used fans) and on "El Cuco" (slow and bitter to the bones, with very good guitar riffs), the aggressive 'fuck you' on musical form called "G.A.A.D.", the Hardcore/Thrash/Death Metal approach used on "(In the) Slaughterline" (in some moments, something from old TERRORIZER is heard, especially on the guitars and drums), and the experimental touches in the vein of VOIVOD on "Roadkill". The best is to try all the songs, don't be lazy!

GO AHEAD AND DIE is another great work of Cavalera's clan, so hear "Go Ahead and Die", blow your ears off and understand why Max can be said as a Midas king in Metal. And thanks to Shinigami Records here in Brazil, I heard the album when it was released here, so this review was pretty easy to write.
