So here we have the new release from Youngstown, Ohio based grunge act GLASS ALICE with their new album "Bitten." They burst onto the scene back in 2018 and even got acclaimed producer Jim Wirt who has worked with the likes of INCUBUS, HOOBASTANK and ALIEN ANT FARM. The album opens with the title track "Bitten". Right from the start you can hear those dirty sounding guitars and there are parts here that do have a very NIRVANA feel to it. The song does have a catchy chorus and some solid rhythms and a guitar solo that resembles "Come As You Are" by NIRVANA a little bit.
An acoustic guitar opens up the next track "Gravity". Those acoustic lines are then played on clean electric guitar and then to dirty which shows how the song progresses with tone. It is quite a melodic song with some very heart felt vocals heard here and a guitar solo that is simple but also to the point. With the song "Oh Boy" we get this build from the start which then picks up a bit as the band comes in. This song also features a catchy enough chorus. This is a very simple and to the pint type of song.
"Dirty Wings" has this nice chord arrangement to it and is a great song for getting a crowd going. Pretty decent use of those clean to dirty sounding guitar dynamics and is also a pretty good song too. One of the best that appears here on the album. "Bed Head" has this very trippy sounding instrumentation to it. The heavy riffing then takes over for a big and loud chorus. This sounds to me like GLASS ALICE are tempting to make a fun sounding song and it does sound very different to the rest of the band.
Things go a little melodic again for the song "Sickened". You can here in this one that the band are going for a really big sounding chorus here but somehow it just doesn't quite get there. The album ends with two demo songs. This first being "Suckerpunch (demo)". I did like the very melodic intro that the song had. The second being "Voices (demo)" which is acoustic and does sound a little SEETHER like. Both of these demo's sound very raw and with a bit more work done the could have made nice inclusions on this album.
The first thing that is quite noticeable here is that all the guitars do have that dirty sounding grunge sound that was popular in the early 90's and the vocals have that gravelness to them. The songs here are dark but also kind of simple and you can really here the grunge influence present here with GLASS ALICE. With the production here on Bitten the whole thing sounds like a demo and could have been done a little better.
