Funest - Desecrating Obscurity album cover

Your Ol' Big Daddy here really was surprised when started to hear this album, for I could swear this was an old Death Metal band from Sweden, for FUNEST seems like ENTOMBED, GRAVE and DISMEMBER from their earlier works. But they're from Italy, and as their first album, "Desecrating Obscurity", plays, we can hear clearly that they're an Old School Death Metal band, gathering the elements from the style on the first part of the 90's.

It's raw, putrid to the core, aggressive and sounding really nasty. But when we're talking from Death Metal, this is the better way to describe a work. Grunts coming from a deep cavern, guitars sounding like a cruel jigsaw attack, bass and drums focused on a strong and massive rhythmic basis. And besides it's nothing really new, it's good.

The quality of sound production is the same from the earlier albums from Swedish Death Metal: raw and putrid, with a quality in the midterm. Of course it was what they wanted, but why not a cleaner sound? It wouldn't damage their work, and got some best results. It's not bad, don't get the wrong idea, but good be better. And the album has two special guests: Johan Jansson (vocals on "Fornicate the Deceased" and "Deranged Baptism") and Arcanus Incubus (keyboards on "Deranged Baptism").

Some good songs are on the album, as the abusive filthy "Buried and Forsaken", the same goes for "Darkened Genesis", "Blessed Shepherd Of Decline", and "Deranged Baptism".

The work is good, no doubt about this, but they need more tempo changes, and to make some different paces of their songs (sometimes we can hear that this album has only one way of it, making all the songs sound alike).
