Call Of The North
Frozen Crown
FROZEN CROWN hailing from Milan, Italy were formed in 2017. The Power Metal outfit release their fourth full-length album. "Call Of The North" was recorded, produced, mixed, and mastered by Andrea Fusini (DELAIN; VOLTURIAN) at Fusix Studio Italy. It has a length of more than 53 minutes. The album was released via Italian Power, Thrash, and Heavy Metal specialists Scarlet Records. The album starts off in style with epic guitar melodies transitioning into the fast title song. "Call Of The North" is a strong opener with crisp and sharp guitar riffing, pace, aggression, and epic melodies in the vocal lines. The clean vocals of Giada Etro cover most of the vocal range, but predominantly the medium to the higher end. The break starts with an acoustic part, which include a few Folk Metal vibes introducing the extended lead guitar solo. "Call Of The North" is the official video release, and the YouTube link is given below.
"Fire In The Sky" continues with the pace of the title song. Introduced by traditional Power Metal guitar riffs, the melodies are catchy, especially the vocal melodies for the chorus have some anthemic features. "Fire In The Sky" has a lot of tempo and rhythm changes. While the verses are the fast parts, the choruses are mid-tempo parts, but with a few subtle rhythm breaks. The song is not always straightforward to follow, it is easy to get lost especially during the break. Highlight is the extended and very contributing lead guitar solo. "Black Heart" starts with heavy and thunderous riffing at mid-tempo. The melodies are darker compared to the opening tracks and the vocals are a bit more aggressive during the verse parts. The choruses are epic as in most of the songs, including a lot of background vocals. "Black Heart" is a powerful track even though the chorus parts serve as a counterpoint with all their epic components. "Victorious" starts with the acoustic guitars and the vocals, and the track includes again a few Folk Metal vibes. As the track goes on, the vocals have background choir support. After about two minutes acoustic, there is a sharp transition, where tight guitar riffing with staccato-type of riffing at frantic pace takes over. From that point onwards, "Victorious" is arguably the fastest track on the album. Altogether, "Victorious" is surely one of the best tracks on the album.
"In A Moment" is a mid-tempo track with heavy riffing, where the verse parts are slightly faster and more direct compared to the chorus parts. The vocals adapt excellently to the different sounds in the verse and chorus parts, as the vocals during the verses are more direct and aggressive compared to the epic chorus parts. The choruses come again with lots of background support including a few choir parts. Highlight of the track is the excellent drumming of Niso Tomasini. "Legion" has a guitar-driven start at insane pace, but transitions quickly into a mid-tempo track. There are a few changes in pace and rhythm as the chorus parts are at a slow and measured tempo. The vocals during the chorus part have once again a lot of background vocal support. "Until The End" starts with another acoustic guitar and vocal intro, and then transitions into a mid-tempo track with catchy melodies and riffing. The bridges and the choruses are played at high pace and the vocal melodies are almost anthemic. "Until The End" is a song made for the pit and I am pretty sure that the song will be part of the FROZEN CROWN setlists as it has all the features to become a fan favorite. "Now Or Never" starts with epic melodies and guitar riffing. It is a fast track with a lot of catchiness in the vocal melodies, in particular during the chorus. The song is direct with a simple structure, there are no twists in tempo and rhythm with the exception of a short subtle change in rhythm during the chorus part. The lead guitars have a large contribution to the track and drive the song forward and also the lead guitar solo is instrumental for the track.
"One For All" is another track starting with the acoustic guitars and the vocals. The chorus part starts abruptly with all the instruments joining in driven by powerful guitar riffs. The vocal chorus line is catchy with almost sing-along choruses. The break includes, beside the lead guitar solo, very powerful and dark guitar riffs and crushing bass lines. The album finishes with "Far Away" and with an extended instrumental part starting at mid-tempo and then transitioning into a short slower part. The song "restarts" with tight riffing at fast pace and the vocals joining in as well. There are a lot of tempo and rhythm breaks. While the verse and chorus parts are fast, the bridge is at mid-tempo. The seven minute epic "Far Away" is the traditional Power Metal song where the lead guitars provide once again the highlight of the track. The song is a great way to end the album.
FROZEN CROWN delivers an excellent Power Metal album. "Call Of The North" is probably their best album to date and it has everything what Power Metal fans all over the world love so much: pace, epic melodies, tight riffing, great lead guitar solos, and a vocalist who keeps the sound perfectly together. "Call Of The North" has excellent songs from the start to the end, which is evidence for mature songwriting. The album is very well produced. FROZEN CROWN set the bar high with "Call Of The North" and I would be surprised if the album would not be part of the top of the year reviews.
