From Zero
Freakstorm
FREAKSTORM is a German Rock band formed in 2016. They released their debut EP in 2018, titled "We Got the Fire," and are now back with the follow-up sophomore EP titled "From Zero." The album contains six tracks. "Can't Keep me Down" leads off the album. It opens with an easy-listening guitar riff and Sinah's great vocal control. The harmonies in the chorus are really strong as she negotiates the upper ranges easily. The guitar work could use some thickening up, but I understand why they would want the focus to be on her voice. "Payback Time" is a bit slower in pace and feature her vocals prominently again. Without many accents it loses the ability to really get off the ground, however.
"Not the One" opens with soft guitar chords and then they come in heavy and with authority. A bit of a ballad, she talks about how she hopes he can see that she was "not the one" for him. Sinah really has a beautiful voice but now the band needs to work on backing her up a little more. "Nothing" hears the pace picking up a bit. Her vocals soar in the chorus especially with the backing parts. "Sometimes" opens with an emotional appeal from Sinah. It's a ballad of sorts that really hones in on the softer side of the band. It gives you a nice gut check. "We got the Fire" closes the album, ending things on a positive note. The vocal harmonies are nicely done here.
As I mentioned before, the focus of the band is on Sinah's vocals, but I believe the other instruments can pick up the pace some more and then the band would really be onto something. Though it's just an EP, it leaves me wanting more from the band. Perhaps some more moving guitar parts or some heavier accents here and there would set them apart. As it is, I will file it under "has potential" but this could be a band to really keep an eye on.
