Convergence

Fractal Generator

Overall, this album was put together carefully and considerately. It’s highly technical, but it also breathes. Any fan of Tech Death will surely find a lot to love on this album.

From Bandcamp, "Convergence" is the latest sci-fi odyssey by Canadian trio FRACTAL GENERATOR. Dive into a universe where twisted, relentless and ominous riffs are infused with futuristic intensity and collide with inhuman precision. "A suspected glitch in the universal simulation causes new planets to appear in our solar system. “Convergence” is an album that attempts to capture the essence of this cosmic upheaval, exploring these new planets into journeys of chaos, song by song."

“Cryogenian” is first, and I am first stuck by the weight of their sound. To me, it sounds like someone plucked a planet from the cosmos and threw it downwards. It is hurling down through space, but being controlled perfectly so as not to collide with any other planets along the way. All the time it falls, it leaves a trail of sound so loud that it blasts out your eardrums. “Convergence” is even tighter and denser. Each chaotic step is carefully calculated, even though that from the outside looking in, it seems impossible. “Askesis” has a deep rumble that sounds like skulls getting crushed under the weight of machinery.

“Obelisk” is an energetic song with some early meter shifting, and the drummer keeps impeccable timing through all of them. The dissonance is as heavy as the dark clouds that loom overhead. “Ciphertext” has some symphonic and even electronic elements in the mix, bringing some diversity to the album. The sound is tinged with melancholy, but also ripe with anger. The lead guitar solo drips with pig squeals and whammy bar dives. “Xiphoid” asks no questions and takes no prisoners. “Algorithmic Pathways” has a very heavy bottom end, like a skyscraper embedded in concrete. Although it may sway in the wind, it will not fall. There are also heavy grooves in this song that will get your head moving.

“Encephalon” closes the album, with a hasty pace and an ominous sound. The piano used in the song is oddly pleasing, and keyboards/effects round out the song. Overall, this album was put together carefully and considerately. It’s highly technical, but it also breathes. Any fan of Tech Death will surely find a lot to love on this album.
