Terra Nova
Flight of Icarus

From their Facebook page, “Terra Nova” is heavier and more guitar-driven than our previous two. Each album has amped up the intensity just a notch, but this time it felt more natural. The pop melodies and the Icarus atmosphere is still very much present but the music is leaning more towards a metal edge, if you will. Every song brings something unique to the overall picture as we have experimented more with different styles and various sub-genres.” The album has eleven song, and the first is an instrumental introduction, leading to the title track. Keyboards dominate out of the gate, followed by heavy, slow, and solemn tones. The vocalist has an excellent voice…gentle when it needs to be, and powerful enough to carry the emotions of the song.
“Through Space and Time” has some very nice melodies, especially in the vocals and keyboards. This type of music isn’t my normal “go-to,” but it’s honest, genuine, and catchy. “Deus” has another hefty plate of keyboards to along with the music. It’s just heavy enough for ardent Metal fans, and melodic for those of us who need melody in their music. “God Bless” has a faster-moving pace with an energetic, catchy riff, and the band blends guitar, vocals, bass, and keys into a very harmonizing mix. “War Cry” has that strong, anthemic quality to the song, and it makes me want to get up and go to battle with the band. Again, melody is used smartly ad the main medium in this song, and they make no bones about it.
“Nangilima” has another strong keyboard line, and they use it so well. It doesn’t take over the music…it augments it. The emotions in this song are reminiscent of all of the things that were good in your past, and they beg you to remember them fondly, but not dwell on them. “Liberi” is sung in their native language, and it has a rocking beat that fills you with promise. This song is just straight joy from start to finish. They close the album with a cover song of IRON MAIDEN, true to their namesake. It’s a curious take on the song however…it has their stamp all over it. What pleases me most about the album is the melody. They don’t just wield it…they embrace it, at every turn. The songs have a hard enough edge to please most Metalheads, but it’s within the realm of melody that the album soars highest.
