Christian Metal might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a Norwegian Metal band. However, EXTOL happens to be one of the most prominent and acclaimed bands that bear this label thanks to their solid career pushing over 20 years of outstanding musical proficiency and a great fusion of Progressive and Death Metal. After being on hiatus for around 5 years, the band is now back with an aptly-self-titled new album, which is actually worth the wait of fans who have been wistfully eager to hear new material after almost 8 years of idleness.
"Extol", the band's 5th full-length album, is just another step further in their already highly-extolled musical journey, and it leaves no room for disappointment. The mind blowing technical accuracy and proficiency on guitars and drums is still there and kicking. Vocals are taken to the next level, ranging from harsher growls and shrieks present on their older albums "Burial" and "Undeceived" to the finest clean vocals reminiscent of "The Blueprint Dives". The complexity in the riffs and the off-rhythm drumming will certainly get you hooked after going through the whole thing for a couple of times. Every single track has its own touch and all are almost equally interesting. Still, "A Gift Beyond Human Reach" (video below) remains quite special to me, and I have to say it's one of the best they've ever done. Lyrically, the album continues in the same vein as all of its predecessors, EXTOL are clinging on to their Christian faith.
A great album indeed, wrapped in the best-looking cover artwork they've come up with so far.
