Exist In Ruin
From their EPK, "Persecution is the overwhelming theme throughout where each song tells a story of a 'victim' being persecuted by some entity, malpractice, or inner turmoil. All songs (guitars, bass, and drum programming) are written and performed by Teren, including lyric writing and vocal pattern designs. During the writing process Teren recruited world-class musicians from around the globe to make his dark musical vision a reality. The album has six songs.
The title track is the first. The opening tones are filled with symphonic elements, followed by deep guttural vocals and backing choirs. The lead guitar work is excellent and loaded with effects. You can tell that a lot when into this composition. "Stained Legacy" is another depressive sound rounded out with plenty background elements, and even some experimentation...cue the eerie vocals leading to the second chorus. Again, the leads are excellent, and the backing choirs have a harrowing quality to them. "The Affliction" features another rich and rounded sound again with a plethora of backing symphonics. However, half-way through the album, the first thing songs have a similar sound overall.
"Paradigm" has some keyboard presence to go along with the strings and other symphonic sounds. At times, they seem just a bit too strong when it comes the music, however. I believe the Black and Death sounds should be a bit more noticeable. "Scourge" features a bit of female vocals, both harsh and clean, to augment the filthy qualities of the song. The lead breaks are once again strong, and Teren shows his skills on the instrument. "Although I Live I Die" closes the album. It begins with tense and ominous tones, leading to a hasty sound filled with guitars and symphonics. The sound is mostly balanced but again, the symphonic elements can take over at times.
This was a pretty-well-thought out album, with a strong mix of a few genres. The symphonic elements support the aggressive backbone of Black and Death Metal, and they are always there, working in the background, though at times they do seem to take over the sound a bit. Still, this was a strongly composed album, that could have used a little diversity here and there, but I am interested enough to see what the band has up their sleeve with the next album.
