Cerberus
Enchantya
ENCHANTYA hailing from Lisbon, Portugal were formed in 2004. They play a mixture of Heavy and Gothic Metal. Their new album is the third full-length release, and it has a length of about 50 minutes. The album was produced, mixed, and mastered by Fernando Matias (BLACK WIDOWS; GWYDION; WE ARE THE DAMNED) at the Pentagon Audio Manufacturers. It was released via Finnish Gothic, Power and melodic Death Metal specialists Inverse Records.
The album name is taken from the Greek mythology. A Cerberus is a multi-headed dog, who guards the gates of the underworld, preventing the Death from leaving. This dog comes out with a cinematic intro building up atmosphere and tension. "Karma" is a pre-lude transitioning into "All Down In Flames", which bursts into powerful riffing supported by plenty of double-bass drumming at mid-tempo. The underlying orchestral arrangements are still maintained from the opening pre-lude and the vocals have a lot of choir support. The female vocals are a mixture of harsh Rock vocals, angelic higher pitched clean vocals, and growling vocals around the medium end of the guttural range. There are many changes in tempo and rhythm, which adds complexity to the song structure. "All Down In Flames" is the official video release, and the YouTube link is given below.
"Lunar Fire" has a fast and dynamic start with tight riffing and orchestral arrangements in the background. The song is a continuation of "All Down In Flames" in terms of mixture of vocals including the choir and the growls. The choir and high vocal notes are dominant throughout the song. "Lunar Fire" has a lot of complexity using elements from different genres including Death Metal blast-beats, Power Metal elements as well as symphonic Metal elements. "Alone" is a fast song with heavy riffing and a lot of double-bass drumming. While the verse parts are aggressive and heavy, the chorus parts are symphonic Metal oriented and so there are plenty of vocal tonal shifts throughout the song. "Alone" is a song of contrasts, similarly as "Lunar Fire" as blast-beat driven parts at insane pace change with operatic parts at measured tempo. For me, the crazy parts remain in the memory, making the song to one of the heaviest of the album.
"Prana" is a short inter-lude driven by the piano, which is later joined by the choir, transitioning into "Rising Star" keeping the melodic framework of "Prana". The guitar riffing is heavy at a measured tempo. The chorus parts are epic with the choir becoming dominant at mid-tempo. The break adds brutality with Thrash Metal inspired riffing and the ferocious growls of Rute Fevereiro. All the album songs have a considerable amount of complexity, and "Rising Star" is no exception, but it is still one of the catchiest album songs. "Existing" starts with a lot of oriental vibes and traditional Folk instruments transitioning into a drum and guitar driven super heavy part. There is a mix between the aggressive riffing supported by the growling vocals for the verse parts and the melodic Metal parts for the choruses, both connected by the bridge with the oriental melodies. The chorus melodies are catchy and almost anthemic. The break is driven by a crushing bass and the tight riffing, before the track finishes with the piano and the choir.
"United We Stand" starts with powerful and sharp guitar riffing at mid-tempo. The vocals are an equal share of the growls and the Rock vocals for the verse parts, while the chorus parts are driven by the highly pitched and operatic vocals, which have strong support by the strings. Highlights of the track are the vocals of Rute Fevereiro and the contributing lead guitar solo. "Anima" is another symphonic pre-lude building up tension for "Collective Souls", which is a fast and dynamic track with tight riffing during the verse parts. There are sharp transitions between the verse parts and the mid-tempo chorus parts with epic melodies. The piano has a lot of contribution to the chorus parts driving the track forward together with the vocals. The heaviest and fastest part is the break with the lead guitar solo. "Sons Of Chaos" has a quiet start with many symphonic Metal vibes, before there are multiple shifts in tempo and rhythm for the verse part and the bridge. The chorus part is again harmonic at a measured tempo with catchy melodies. "Sons Of Chaos" is again a track inspired by multiple genres, including Power Metal, melodic Metal, and symphonic Metal. The album finishes fast with "Inward" and aggressive riffing, plenty of double-bass drumming, and the ever-present vocal contrasts of growls, Rock vocals, highly pitched vocals, and choir. "Inward" is a very good reflection of the album as it includes all elements driving the album sound. It is perhaps one of the heaviest songs on "Cerberus" and a good way to end the album.
ENCHANTYA deliver a very good album. "Cerberus" is an album of contrasts, it is a mixture of different and contrasting genre elements, and ENCHANTYA have done a great job to put all those elements together into a harmonic and consistent album sound. "Cerberus" is not an easy-to-listen album, there are many experimental parts and ENCHANTYA are more than happy to cross boundaries. The overarching element is vocalist Rute Fevereiro with her triptych of vocal styles. She keeps the songs brilliantly together and makes this sound possible. The album is well produced. ENCHANTYA release arguably their best album to date. Metal fans, who are open to a mixture of Metal genres, will enjoy "Cerberus" and look forward to exciting live shows of ENCHANTYA.
