Love's Sickness
Emotional Flatline
EMOTIONAL FLATLINE is a five piece, aggressive Metal band from Wisconsin. Recently, the band has reunited and released this six track EP.
"Dying Man" is the first track offered on the album. Following a nice, atmospheric opening, the assault of the vocals bears down hard. The blueprint here is Death/Thrash/Hardcore, and the instrumentation is kept fairly minimal. The rhythm is slow and grinding, and you definitely get the feeling that these are indeed the lamentations of a dying man. By contrast, "Heartstrings" has a much quicker, galloping pace, fueled by double bass and blast beat drumming. Vocals are still at the forefront of their sound however, and singer T.J. has a very piercing high end scream. He uses the screaming to really embody the sound of the band. "Inculcating Violence" is another track that opens slowly, with some largely unintelligible speaking, over the back drop of low, ominous music.
The title track, "Love's Sickness," features some more complicated riffing with a bit more groove. T.J. uses a few different vocal styles and ranges to make his point. It is a pretty straightforward and brutal track. The chorus is nicely done, with a lot of punch and power. "Sick of You" is an aggressive track, with a nice tradeoff between vocal techniques and guitar parts. The chorus is drawn out for emphasis, and you can hear how sick he really is of you. "The Sanctity of Lies" closes out the album, with a running guitar riff and some Hardcore style vocals.
Overall it is a fairly decent effort on behalf of the band. TJ's vocals are to me the highlight of the album, and the instrumentation is at times a bit too minimal. But there is definitely a blueprint here that they can build on.
