Unbreakable

Ellefson/Soto

“Unbreakable” is undoubtedly and unequivocally a Metal record, one where the music is fierce, straight forward and very much in your face. It ranges from Heavy Metal up to and brushing against Thrash Metal territory.

Damn, I believe that Jeff Scott Soto has some scores to settle, has some issues that need clarification, as his lyrics on this, the second ELLEFSON/SOTO album, named "Unbreakable", leave no doubt as to what he means, what his intentions are and how he feels about what has been happening in his life. It starts off nice with the title song, where you will learn that whatever has happened to him, he is a s strong as ever. But then you have "SOAB". In that one he tells us he has hardened his attitude over the years, but he is "No More Mr. Nice Guy".  Further on you will encounter titles like "Hate You, Hate Me", "Vengeance" and "Snakes And Bastards" where he is quite clearly upset about what others have done to him, and that he makes it clearly known what he thinks of those people as well as how he has reacted or still will react. To top it all off, there is a bonus track that originally was not mentioned, and that is "Death On Two Legs". Yep, the QUEEN classic. And all of us know what that song really is about, and it just is another emphasis as to how angry, frustrated and determined the singer is after all those experiences.

I love the fact that all these lyrics are entwined into proper and bloody excellent Metal songs. And yes, even a power ballad like "Hate You, Hate Me" really has balls. "Unbreakable" is undoubtedly and unequivocally a Metal record, one where the music is fierce, straight forward and very much in your face. It ranges from Heavy Metal up to and brushing against Thrash Metal territory. Of course you will hear some Melodic influences, but seeing how you're used to Jeff Scott Soto singing softer stuff, it is a revelation and a very pleasant surprise to hear him go for the throat, to let go of all his emotions. You hear him sing as well as shout. I'm not going to elaborate too much about the guest singers, as once you hear the songs, it is very clear where they have collaborated. As for the songs on "Unbreakable", without fail they are all outstanding. And as for the bonus track "Death On Two Legs", ELLEFSON/SOTO has been able to make it their own without doing the original an injustice. For me this is a perfect ending to an immensely impressive  and "Unbreakable" album.
