Heaven in Flames
Eighty One Hundred
EIGHTY ONE HUNDRED, are an enigmatic Heavy Metal, sell professed Rage Metal band form in 2016 in Naples Italy. In their words "five guys who're passionate about music and need to express it". They believe music can be used to start an "Intellectual Revolution". Let's see if they live up to their ideals. Opening track "Overture 80100" is as the name suggests is the obligatory musical intro to the album, leading into the title track "Heaven In Flame", a mid-paced melodic Heavy Metal tune. However as a title track it lacks something.
"Cry Out" changes up a gear, at the start, still with bags of melody, before changing tempo again, and again, and again, ending as it started. A punchy vocal, especially on the chorus. "Payback My Time" is again a slower number. A blend of melodic metal and a modern take on the vocals, especially the chorus' shouted reply to Screamer's sung lines. "No Way Out" is similar in structure, and they fit together well. Musically this one is one of my favorites on the album, I like the guitar sound on this track, and a nice bass break too, it works well.
"Mater Gaia" is overwrought and over-blown. Its heavy on the message, a little too heavy I'm afraid. I wish I liked this more than I do, and there are parts of it that are good, the twin guitar interplay between Mr White and Taker is powerful, but the track for me misses the mark. "Power Of Revolution" another chugger, it actually has a fairly different sound to the rest of the album, the lead vocal underpinned by the low level, almost spoken backing vocal, give the track a different feel, it still isn't blessed with pace, but you can feel the rage on this one.
And hereby lays the problem, these guys are obviously great musicians who know their craft, but the substance looses something to the style. I find it hard to put my finger on exactly why, for me it doesn't work. Perhaps it is the lyrical content doesn't fit with the melodic nature of a lot of the music, but something doesn't gel for this listener, and I find it a shame, because I feel I should like this more. And there are bits I like. "Cry Out", "Payback My Time", "no Way Out" and "Power Of Revolution", I really like, and more like this on the next album and I will be happy.
Oh and guys drop the stage names, I want to get to know YOU the guys behind the music, it may give me more of a connection to you and your ideas and ideals.
