Eastfrisian Terror - EastfrisiApokalpyse album cover

The first thing I thought when this album came across my table was "Where in the hell is East Frisia?" After a short Google search, I learned that the Frisian Islands, where EASTFRISIAN TERROR resides, are located off the northwestern coast of Germany in the federal state of Lower Saxony. If you thought that the band name was just some representation of the artist's stomping ground and if you have the luxury of speaking German (which I don't), you may be able to pick up some Frisian history and cultural references. That is you can if you can interpret anything from the pig squeals and guttural belching.

The language barrier doesn't entirely prevent the audience from experiencing the brand of brutality that this band has refined for "EastfrisiApokalypse." There are a couple of moments where you can hear clear German conversation on the tracks "Mähdrescher Blus," "Lever dood as Slav," and "Eala Freya Fresena." For a monolingual editor, these moments are certainly confusing and off-setting but not nearly enough to draw away from the music.

EASTFRISIAN TERROR delivers a healthy mixture of OBITUARY, DYING FETUS and DISCHARGE. It's an iron-fisted smash-mix of grindcore, brutal death metal and Avant Garde hardcore. If you're already well-acquainted with these subgenres, you will feel right at home with EASTFRISIAN TERROR. Although the band statement claims that the motifs of the songwriting are devoid of the typical gore, violence, and gross-out medical symptoms, you can feel the gore dripping from the walls when you play "EastfrisiApokalypse". Songs like "Lever dood as Slav," "De Quade Foelke," "Eastfrisian Terror," and "Lapskaus" are sure to skin the inside of your skull and emulsify the membrane into a putrid slush.

Perhaps the recording could've sounded a little better. These tracks definitely sound like the band during a rehearsal so things on "EastfrisiApokalypse" sound as though you were seeing the band perform live. That's really the only critique I can make about EASTFRISIAN TERROR because everything else sounds very solid and to-the-point. You can't really ask for a whole lot more when it comes to Death/Grind music.
