Dejection Chrysalis

Dysentery

Let me put the Death Metal in general and especially the DYSENTERY fans at ease. What you get on “Dejection Chrysalis” can’t be construed as anything else that Brutal Death Metal.

I got myself another Death Metal band to review, with the very apt name of DYSENTERY. A band from Waltham, Massachusetts, Usa that has been making people miserable since 2002. In the first fourteen years of their existence the band were able to give the public three studio albums, three demos and two spilt albums. All of which are unknown to me. Some ten years after their last studio album the band has surprised friend and foe by returning with just over 29 minutes of self-explanatory music. I know it called Slam/Brutal Death Metal when you look up the band on internet, but I found that their latest effort, called "Dejection Chrysalis" (release date 7 November 2025) is not all what I expected.

Let me put the Death Metal in general and especially the DYSENTERY fans at ease before I go any further. What you get on "Dejection Chrysalis" can't be construed as anything else that Brutal Death Metal, but I was expecting a lot more explosive rhythms and even more blastbeats to try and shatter my eardrums when and where possible. Not that they aren't there, but not as much as I anticipated. What is there are 10 songs that make up a good album with very enticing and demanding Death Metal. All ten are filled with very low sounding distorted guitars, and even lower sounding vocals that are extremely fitting for this kind of music. with a rumbling bass guitar that just keeps on making the ground shake and drums that are being used properly it makes for a half hour of rather pleasant noise.

Unfortunately the drummer came to the recording sessions not entirely prepared. His snare drum must have been broken and replaced by a cast iron pot, which he is hitting with a wooden spoon. Yes, exactly as you did when you were a child.  METALLICA and FLOTSAM & JETSAM were crucified when they had that kind of sound. It won't come that far with DYSENTERY, as it doesn't detract from the music as much on "Dejection Chrysalis". What surprises me most is that I can't help but like the band best when they play fast, when the riffing as well as the drums go faster. Thankfully that happens enough to appease my appetite, making "Dejection Chrysalis" a good record in my books. I just think that if DYSENTERY decides to break the speed limit a little more often, they would sound even more impressive.
