Religious Disease

Disarray

Good Thrash Metal from Sweden.
November 13, 2024

We visited Sweden today with the band DISARRAY ( it rhymes!) and this band is pretty young as well as their members. Kids are still going crazy for Thrash Metal nowadays. It never gets old. The band is releasing their second album Religious Disease via Jawbreaker records and promises to deliver some good Thrash Metal in our veins. They do not lose any time with the first track “Forbidden Of Speech”. Pure Thrash based on the early years of the greats of the genre like SLAYER. The riffs come thick and fast like in “Nightmarish Gaze”that has total early METALLICA years vibes with those long heavy instrumentals before the vocal comes in. The speed is relentless and well commanded by drummer Morgan Ottenvang as you can hear in “Bound To Kill”. The band is creative on the riffs and general music structure and also knows how to mix speed with a slower, more cadenced guitar riff as in “Hell’s Fire”.

DISARRAY  has a mean bass player in Edvin Mossfeldt and the bass is well present in the mix which is always a good thing to my ears. The guys drank from all the good sources in the traditional Thrash Metal era of the early 80’s. You can hear in their sound clear influence by SODOM, DESTRUCTION, TESTAMENT to name a few. “Psychosis” starts and is another punch in the face. No ballads here folks, however, the band leans in long introductory riff arrangements building the mood for what is to come requiring some well seasoned musicians and these young fellas are killing it. Just check “Guilty Until Proven Innocent” and the great “Realize You’re Already Dead”. It makes me happy to learn that good Thrash Metal could transcend generations and be well played and well performed by new bands nowadays. The creativity on the chug chug riffs, the double bass drum madness, and the piercing guitar solos are all there. I have to point out that despite a decent production, in some tracks, my ears noticed that in some fast riffs, the guitar may be slightly out of tempo with the fast drums causing a little delay and mudding the riff a little. Nothing major , but I believe it requires some attention. DISARRAY has very competent guitar players in Valter Ernerot and Lucas Lee that also sings. Their riffs complement each other as you can hear in “Apostate” and the violence in which they are delivered is impressive.

However, the band credits Valter Ernerot as a “rhythm” guitarist. Hey Valter! Nowadays there is no such a thing as a “rhythm” guitarist. If this is real, learn some solos man! The other guy already sings, plays the guitar and does all the solos? Step up your game man. If you already can play what I just have heard in tracks like “Religious Disease” and many others in this album, you are a great guitar player already. You just need to kill on the pentatonics. In regards to the singing, Lucas Lee takes care of the job with property and his voice suits the style perfectly, reminding me a little of Tom Angelripper (go Google it). The guy can do great guitar solos as well (Hey Walter!). We end our journey with another killer track “Inhuman Reign” that closes this good second album from a band that was created only in 2023. If the lads keep developing like this, I can see a good future for this band in the Thrash Metal scene.
