Die Sünde - Strega album cover

DIE SUNDE translates to "The Sin" in German. From their Presskit, "formed in 2018, with members coming from different musical backgrounds. Our sound is the result of picking little aspects of our influences, from Black Metal to Post Hardcore, mixing them, and creating a personal sound without going out of track with our context. The lyrics and the music are the representation of the "worst:" the worst feeling, the worst situation, where you don't recognize yourself anymore, and where the pain is bigger than the anger itself." The album contains one lengthy song, the title track.

It's a 20-minute opus, opening with sad and depressive tones. Slowly, other elements are added, like drums and lead guitar. The vocals then roar up like a tsunami overtaking a city. They are angry, boastful and devastating. It builds to an early crescendo of thick bass notes, ominous rhythms and vocals more intense than anything you have experienced. The sound then backs off to some ominous tones, and a steady beat of desperation. The tortured vocals return following a brief pause, as livid as ever. The angry sound comes from various layers in the music. It takes a darker turn close to the half-way mark, with guttural vocals and blasphemous sounds.

The subject yells to the skies above, shaking his fists at the Gods. "I will destroy all of you," he vows. Following his outrage, he reaches down within and gathers all his might for a final "fuck you" to the world. His final outcry lays waste to every living thing around him, and he ends up alone for eternity. Maybe that was his objective? He seems content with how things have turned out, although the pain is still deep down inside him, and can never be totally erased.

To summarize, I take the meaning of the band title. A sin can certainly make someone feel self-conscious, embarrassed, or even ashamed, especially if you feel you sinned against the teachings of a higher power. Maybe someone you admire called you out on your sin. Maybe it was made public. What would you do? Lash out and make the hypocrite pay? I would. Pain is something that can affect different people differently. Some of us are able to shut it off, to disconnect it. While even the slightest pain can burn inside someone else with a flaming intensity. But when the pain becomes "bigger than the anger itself," one becomes dangerous to oneself, and to others. This album was that pain intensified forever.
