Where I Am the Chalice, Be Thou the Blood
Devilpriest

When you talk about the Polish Metal scene there are a few bands that spring to mind. BEHEMOTH, HATE, VADER, DECAPITATED, BATUSHKA well you can add another one to this list DEVILPRIEST. Formed in 2015 in Silesia, Poland, DEVILPRIES was born from the union of extreme-metal veterans Tom Hermies (guitars/vocals; DEUS MORTEM, IMPERATOR) and Necro Docre (drums; ANIMA DAMNATA, MORD, WITCHMASTER). Their debut, Devil Inspired Chants (November 10, 2017), They came out all guns blazing with a relentless attack of blackened‑death blending blistering riffs, chaotic tempo shifts, and occult atmosphere along the lines of early 90s pioneers like MORBID ANGEL, BEHEMOTH, and IMMOLATION.
Following lineup changes that reduced the band to a duo, DEVILPRIEST returned in 2022 with In Repugnant Adoration, a tighter and more conceptually coherent record exploring six stages of Satanic enlightenment. Fast forward to 2025 and they release this little gem called Where I Am the Chalice, Be Thou the Blood on June the 27th via Nuclear Winter Records and its safe to say that the Brutal Metal sound that we are used to with the Polish is alive and well. Now a quartet with M.Prelati (guitars) and Passage de Rais (bass), DEVILPRIEST deliver seven tracks of hypnotic, technical, and ritualistic blackened death. The album is described as both spiritual offering and sonic weapon: multilayered composition, trance rhythms, blistering blasts, and dissonant riffing that break the bones of the compassionate
Opening this ritual of mayhem is the song He Is In Me (5:29) This track starts off with a cheeky little riff that reminds me of one of my favourite bands PRIMORDIAL my ears prick up Immediately. From there they blast into some old school Blackened-Death and Mid-Tempo burst of aggression. To be honest it sounded a bit repetitive towards the end but still it’s a solid opening track. Dragon of Blasphemy (4:05) This brought me back to the 90’s and the band that came to mind was Australia’s BESTIAL WARLUST Later to become DESTROYER 666. Like the former, the song does go off the rails a bit but still brutal, nonetheless. And the Brutality keeps coming with Track three Unwavering in the Left Hand Path (4:35) Brutal in some parts but a nice mid-pace thrashy groove going on here. Absolute Banger. SNEGTH IER ARNES (The Words That Have Become the Effect) (5:11) This is tight AF and showcases the bands talents. Very complex and technical.
Channeling Into the Peerless Transgressiveness (5:56) This gives me early MORBID ANGEL vibes and MORGOTH. Again, the arrangements are very complex, and they do not skip out on the savagery. The Enmity Against the Grace (4:11) Drumming is off the page on this one and love how they incorporate Black Metal elements with Death Metal. The Prayer of Hell (5:22) Last track takes you on a roller coaster of blast beats, groovy mid pace riffing and excellent double kick drum work. Great way to close the proceedings and end this ritual of brutality.
Verdict: This Seven track banger took me on a journey that dabbled in so many genres, whether it was Blackend-Thrash Metal, Black Metal, Death Metal one thing that stood out was the Brutalness of DEVILPRIEST and as stated earlier they have cemented there place in the Polish Metal Scene as one of the Heavyweights along side their peers
