Devil Sold His Soul - A Fragile Hope album cover

You know that sometimes the first impression you get from a band is not what you will finally feel after coming in contact with its music. DEVIL SOLD HIS SOUL is one of those examples. Even though I thought that they would be a Metalcore band (a tough and brutal one), they ended up being something totally different.

The fact that they are English did not amaze me, since I haven't listened to anything good coming from there since the high and mighty CARCASS! I read some good reviews about them on Kerrang! magazine, the magazine that has ended up embracing every shitty Metalcore release no matter what it is worth!

This band is playing a pretty strange mixture of post Hardcore, the way bands like ISIS and NEUROSIS have delivered, and of course cannot match their gloriousness! If you add some Sludge elements and some Prog stuff that resemble to TOOL (no DREAM THEATER stuff in here) you may get an example of what they sound like.

The album starts with the intro In The Absence Of Light, a totally atmospheric and apocalyptic intro that is 100% ISIS style. And then there is chaos. And I mean it in a negative way. The band is lost in the cyclone of mediocrity. The tracks are really boring (in my humble opinion of course) and did not even make me stay focused on the album at all! The vocals are incredibly extreme and that's one of the few things that I liked in this album. DEVIL SOLD HIS SOUL were only able to attract my attention only for some moments, when they add some groove to their music. They basically try to copy their influences and they end up being boring. Their originality shows up only for a few moments, where they can easily make you want to listen to the rest of the album.

As you can see, DEVIL SOLD HIS SOUL can become a band that will compete some of the big names in this scene, they just have to try and compose original stuff. I am not going to listen to this album again, but fans of the genre definitely will.
