Chalk up another band that has risen from the dead! DESOLATION ANGELS is the collective dream of guitarists Keith Sharp and Robin Brancher (the only two constant members) back when New Wave of British Heavy Metal was in its prime. The band was well-received, becoming a cult hit in the mid 80's, and they tried taking that fame with them to the states. They had their work cut out for them in Los Angeles, gathering a whole new fan base and creating a reputation for themselves. They played a few shows on the Sunset Strip and around Hollywood before settling in Burbank to record their sophomore album "While the Flame Still Burns" (an album they financed themselves). It was a shame that around this time the members started to buckle under all the stress. By the time the 90's rolled around, half the band went back to London. After replacing most of their line up, the band tried to keep themselves afloat by doing some extensive tour time, even entertaining the troops about to fight in the Gulf War. But there was just too much pressure and they officially pulled the plug in 1994. The band then rose from the grave in 2012, walking away from the 70's Doom/NWOBHM rock influences in their earlier days. They've adopted an 80's Power Metal vibe since reforming and haven't looked back.
The band charges forth with high-octane fueled determination in the very first track "Doomsday". Paul Taylor's vocals outshine previous frontman Ian "Curly" Davies; while not hitting any piercing high notes, Taylor doesn't sing with any less conviction. "Another Turn of the Screw" is darker, with more anger heard in the lyrics. "Devil Sent" is a poisonous love song with riffs that don't stay in one place, and finger tangling solos courtesy of Sharp and Brancher. The toxic lyrics continue with "Rotten to the Core" and "Your Blackened Heart" (Jeeze, who are they so mad at?). "Find Your Life" is full of zeal and passionate backing vocals; a very moving track.
DESOLATION ANGELS music is dark and cynical, yet at the same time amazingly passionate about exploring the more painful side of life in their lyrics. Expressive and deep, they plumb down into their souls for "King".
