Playing "Roman Extreme Metal" style, the band DEOS was formed in May 2014 by Fabio Battistella, Jack Graved, and Loïc Depauwe. They wish to combine the sounds of Black and Death Metal with their passion for ancient Rome, which through the lyrics, graphics, and stage play. "Furor Belli" is the band's fourth full-length release and contains twelve tracks. "Diochotomia Mediterranea" is the first cut. It's a short mood-setter, sounding like it comes from the Roman times of the Colosseum. Fat French horn notes cut through the air, segueing into "Decimatio." The production is a bit muted here, but the heavy sound comes though. Harsh vocals combine with thick bass guitars and a dark sound. The riff is fairly simple however.

"Cerberus" is another dark and slow-moving song with horrid vocals. Although the riffing is simple, it is also somewhat effective in getting the point of the song across. But the band has to step up these elementary riffs if they want to compete in today's market. "Cinis Ad Cinerem" features yet another lumbering pace of overly simple riffs without much in the way of backing. This album is quickly becoming forgettable. "Cocles" is another grinding song with wing that fail to even extend, much less allow the song to take off into flight. "Germanicus" begins with double kick drums and a darkened riff, although again, the riffing is far too simple here, and the band apparently refuses to bring any diversity with them.

"Virgo Vestalis" is really the first song that has a different pace. But even with that being said, the music is just not interesting at all. Female vocals provide an edge, and I will take all that I can get in this regard. "Venenum Rex" closes the album. Although the vocals are a bit different here, and the song is fueled by a little bit of energy, it is still very flat. When you get past the visuals here, which are indeed interesting, and the sounds out of ancient Rome, you are left with an album that just doesn't get off the ground. The songs are all slow with overly-simple riffs and very little else going on. I hate to use the word "boring," but that is in fact the best descriptor I could find.
