Demogorgon - You Are Worthless And I Want You Dead album cover

With an album title of "You Are Worthless and I Want You Dead," there is no doubt this Australian's project's fifth full length album will be anything but raw and abrasive. Throw in song titles like "Fuck God And Fuck You" and "I Piss On Your Grave," then expecting anything less (or more) than straight up black metal chaos would be a waste of time. I'm sure it was never the intention but this album isn't an instant masterful classic that will reinvent the wheel.  However, it is a solid slab of blackened hate.  At times, it can come off as corny but I suppose that comes with the territory.  It is very anti-christian, which earns it bonus points with me.  I'm extremely against religion but hate christianity in particular so any band willing to make fun of jeebus gets my vote.

Musically, the songs are centered around the riffs, though they can get monotonous at times.  The production actually doesn't sound too raw but that is fine with me because I'm a well known whore for a great sounding album.  I do appreciate how well the bass stands out, grooving alongside the guitar while giving the songs that extra layer of blasphemy it needs.  The aforementioned "I Piss On Your Grave," is particularly groovy with the bass laying waste to everything.  The album actually starts off with a decent intro in "From Utter Darkness," displaying keyboards and a more symphonic tone in general.  I was actually hoping the rest of the album would incorporate this approach more but maybe next album.

The next track, "Fuck God And Fuck You," is actually more telling in what the rest of the album offers.  The riffs are mid paced and thick backed by solid drumming.  When the band takes it at this speed (or slower), I find it more enjoyable than when the music focuses on speed. I could attribute that to my love for doom but I think I just prefer it when a band takes their time with a methodical approach.  The album flows well for the first five songs then comes to a screeching halt with the pointless interlude "Domination."  Before it can settle into another devastating groove, the album is once again slammed into a brick wall with another boring interlude, "Invocation."  As previously stated, I think these more dynamic ideas/influences would work better if they were more integrated into the song themselves.  As it is now, the flow is just killed.

That flow isn't helped though by the album's long length of nearly an hour across thirteen tracks.  This isn't doom or prog-I don't need a thirteen song, hour long black metal album.  At least not one focusing on a raw style, anyway. With all that being said, the later half of the album contains some bangers though.  If the galloping double bass of "A Cleansing of Impure Blood," and the hammered riffs don't get your own impure blood pumping, do you even like metal?  I love when "There's no peace here!" is shrieked out while the song burns the barn down for the last forty seconds. "A Servant of Satan," is one of the album's best songs-the guitar tone and approach to the riffs remind me a lot of OLD MAN'S CHILD, which is a massive compliment.  The slower parts of the song are just evil-like a snake slowly slithering along the floor, stalking its prey.

The last track, "The Ancient Forest,"  incorporates those dynamics I need so badly.  Clean guitar, subtle keys....it sounds great mixed with the aggressive nature of the music. This one is a larger, slow dirge and probably my most played song on the album.  One hell of a way to end it! All in all, this is a solid effort even if it had some issues here and there.  I definitely look forward to what the next album will bring.
