Hear What I Say!
Deliverance

For over 23 years DELIVERANCE have been brandishing their weapons of warfare, and inviting the greetings of death. Just like the mettle might of BRIDE, this is to be their swan song, so I was very excited to hear what those who have been bought by blood have to offer in this present darkness.
Back in the day, I strongly supported the band and their brethren. In no time, I lost trace of them in the mid-'90s, after avidly promoting their first four impressive works. Along with the likes of other Intense Records Christian artists of the late '80's such as SACRED WARRIOR, VENGEANCE RISING, BLOODGOOD, ANGELICA, etc. DELIVERANCE truly made their mark on our mettle hearts. I was able to catch them live once, and it was an eye-opening experience. Albeit, I too was a Christian at the time, but witnessing them or THE CRUCIFIED perform was quite captivating, and not as easily forgotten.
As a writer, I was offered a chance to listen to their last 2007 effort "As Above - So Below", but I did not care for it at all. For me, it was a horrendous disc of modern implications which left me screaming in contempt. How could they profit from this idiocy and pseudo-intellectual pandering? Is it the beat that bothered me, or was it Jimmy's awful gravel vocals, or the overextended 11 minute instrumental? I could not stomach it. I willingly acknowledge that their convictions, message, mission and what they believe is not a joke, but I just missed the ramming speed leads from their most promising earlier efforts.
Thankfully Brown II and the boys of belief have chosen to return to form. They have looked into the windows of their soul and realized that they want to resume the acclaimed style for which they are most praised. They must have accepted that the jig is up, and fans want to experience that classic feel. "Hear What I Say!" is the embodiment and assimilation of the first four releases. Each track book ends the somber themes of iniquity. "The Annals Of Subterfuge" recaptures that mosh vibe with catchy riffs, heavy hooks, and puncturing potency. "Angst" is clearly an attack of the senses of the exploited. The powerful and passionate "Hope Lies Beyond" has an endearing silent might and epic spirit within it realms, almost hidden. The poignant "Passing" upholds the entombed qualities of a listless life, and reminds me of the pace and presence of the attitude behind the vibe of the album "Stay Of Execution". This could very well be because Michael Phillips is back on target with his guitar guise and guile.
Traditionally DELIVERNACE do not cover other Metal acts, except SABBATH, so their take on MAIDEN's "Eagles" is decent, dare I suggest inventive. After forever playing this album for the past few days, I have come to accept that there are no speed of light anthems, or slay the wicked flesh and blood burners. Jimmy's vocals are more subdued, like what Geoff Tate opted for with later QUEENSRYCHE. If fact, even though it gets under my skin, and makes me fade, or nod, "A Perfect Sky" is their personal attempt at "Silent Lucidity". They even offer two versions of the pumped up "Detox" (English and German). This song is sure to make you awake from your temporary insanity and hopefully clean up your act.
I really appreciate how the lyrics do not preach or force faith values. They are definitely personal and thought- provoking and call for a heightened victory over the self. I find myself falling into agreement, in accord with the sentiment and supplication, if you will. The sanctioned sounds of surrender are more than mere desperate cries, they are words to the wise which if heeded will help you learn how to truly live your life to the fullest.
I must also mention the musicianship. Jayson Sherlock who played devastating drums with the likes of MORTIFICATION, PARAMECIUM, and LIGHT FORCE has been added to the ranks. Mainstay maverick Manny Morales is still present to continue the base sonic execution. Overall the material here will appeal to fans from all eras and decades of DELIVERNACE. Fans of DIE HAPPY, TOURNIQUET, ARMAGEDDON, VALOR, TAKER, RECON, ULTIMATUM, THRESHER, ONCE DEAD, as well as a whole host of secular bands should find something of worth or value now and then.
Personally, I want "Weapons Of Our Warfare II", but I accept that bands have to develop, progress, renew, and evolve. I feel that there are enough well-constructed songs on here to have you still smile and celebrate the words of the wise and the poor of spirit, for those who have the ear to hear it.
