DEFECTED DECAY is a Death Metal two-piece from Germany.Troops of Abomination is their second album and is released on Silent Watcher Records.
If you're a fan of BOLT THROWER, ASPHYX, MORGOTH and GRAVE you'll love it according to the band. However, I'll have to take their word for it, being pretty new to the Death Metal genre and not having listened to those bands.
There is however no doubt that the heavy thumping guitar on "Commit To The Fire" rolls like a tank and with lyrics like
"The 18s are ready to attack, battles smoke fills the air
Extremely roaring thunders, everlasting screams of despair"
The song transports you to the trenches of war. The vocals are very good and you can hear the lyrics but I appreciated that the lyrics came with the press pack I received. The production is decent though the lead guitar is weak and too low in the mix to make an impact.
"Resist" has a slow rumbling riff and I really liked the mid section which has a good stop-start riff where the bass becomes prominent in the sound.
"A Last Farewell" is introduced through some atmospheric whispered vocals over a clean guitar. The song is carried on a doomy heavy guitar rhythm.
"Troops of Abomination" has a slow grinding chugging riff over double-kick drums before speeding up to the chorus. I really liked this track until the lead guitar came and ruined it. It sounded like an out-of-tune police siren and became intensely irritating. The lyrics however are very good including:
"Bred to be destroyed, embodiment of evil
Genocide and annihilation, crimes against humanity"
The song ends on a doomy riff.
As the album continues to "Siege Of Death", it does start to sound a little repetitive and you've heard really what the album has to offer by this point. A guest vocalist adds a gruffer feel to "Beyond All Comprehension" though the lead guitar irritates and there's a really good main riff to the chorus of "Death March"
Whilst the songs do become repetitive, it is unashamedly unpretentious in what it delivers. Death and Doom Metal combined with lyrics about war. The rhythm guitar is central in the mix though the drums do hit hard as well. Vocals are nicely in the mix and it does run over you like a tank with its barrage of heaviness. The lead guitar is too low in the mix though and some of the 'whiny' guitar was unnecessary and distracting. I can't say that the songs are particularly memorable either but the overall execution is competent enough.
