Persona Non Grata

Decrowned

This was a solid album that I believe will appeal to Metalheads who crave that deep punch and power of Metal, but it also offers some melody within the beatings, for those who need a seasoning of that with their musical palate. The entire affair was both dark and energizing.

From bandcamp, “The album itself presents darker and heavier DECROWNED, but still keeping true to our band's essence, uniqueness and variations within the songs. For the old fans of our band this album will throw some surprises in a positive way and hopefully this brings us tons of new fans worldwide. The album can be called a theme album, reflecting things that pass through the generations, consuming us from inside. It is a description of a haunted future and the past that took wrong turns on personal and universal levels. This undefined black matter that flows ignoring time and reason is the unwanted entity...Persona non grata.”

The album has twelve songs. “Folklore” is a brief introduction to the album, and it has clean guitars with a bit of tension, seguing into “Mouth leaks black.” This storm surges forth with a weighted and aggressive sound, with harsh vocals. The song isn’t without melodic moments though, and the riffs are always on the move, and the band have created many backing elements to thicken up the sound. “Rainworld” is also very weighted and contentious sounding, and they drive those riffs right down your throat. The clean vocals offer some relief to the heavy, pounding riffs, but they don’t last long. The band also flexes some excellent musicianship.

“Mindparasite” has punchy, slow rhythms that blasts down doors and breaks steel gates. Again, the chorus and bridge provide some brief tender moments, but the entire song is very dark. “Scarred” begins with tense, clean guitars and some great synths and lead breaks. The clean vocals are inviting at first, but still a bit dark in scope. From there, get caught up in a wave of emotions as the vocals cry out with pain. “Awaken” is like the moment you snap alive again and realize the blackness is still within you. But, it beckons you to work through it and rise above it. Easier said than done. “Faceless” has a Hardcore quality to it, especially considering the vocal cadence and the “call and answer” style, and the chorus is quite catchy.

“The bird and the tree” has some thick background elements mixed in with the heavy, ominous riff. So far, the band has done a nice job experimenting a little while holding down the themes of the album and their central sound. The title track is the culminating song in my opinion, and I love the synth accents mixed in with the brutality. The band knows exactly when to back off a bit as well so that you aren’t beaten to death. The short “Folkore pt. 2” closes the album, and the way it leaves things, it makes me wonder if all of this was just a bad dream. Overall, this was a solid album that I believe will appeal to Metalheads who crave that deep punch and power of Metal, but it also offers some melody within the beatings, for those who need a seasoning of that with their musical palate. The entire affair was both dark and energizing.
