Decipher - Arcane Paths to Resurrection album cover

From Bandcamp, "Greek Black Metal band DECIPHER have come up with a much awaited full length album that showcases their steely vision and penchant for writing superbly structured songs that have an inherent catchiness to them while also being gritty and dynamic. Songs range from having faster, rousing parts to poignant, evocative solos without losing track of the groove that just keeps your head bobbing despite life and painful reminders about it. The album doesn't give you much time to dwell on things as it keeps throwing one deadly riff after the other at you as you're forced to scramble in an attempt to fully comprehend them before life comes to an end. They have effectively eschewed all trends, imbibing the best qualities and giving a fresh, sincere expression that doesn't owe too much to any one style or aspect of it. They've delivered here a timeless piece of Black Metal that's impactful and strongly evocative, and as close to perfection as you can hope to get."

The album has seven songs, and "Chants of the Unholy" is the first. It has a thick and overgrown sound from massive riffs and harrowing vocals. The riff becomes more chugging as the song moves forward, Unlike a lot of Black Metal however, the riffs do not take over the sound. "Lost in Obscurity" features a steadier and slower sound, allowing the filth to sink in deep. The slow burn is just as effective as a quicker one, and the fire still hurts just as much when you reach out and touch it. "Arcane Paths" is a short segue into the second half of the album. Eerie tones swirl in the background, followed by even vocal chants.

"Enslaved to Be" begins with a long scream. The landscape is equal parts anger and despair, a common feature in the genre. "Altar of the Void" is the longest on the album, at close to nine minutes. The sound is fairly even-keeled, and fairly smooth. It creates a sense of hopelessness as it moves along, but the unbridled hate is noteworthy as well. Powerful tones come in towards the end, stamping out all sense of hope. "Penance" is a bossy song with commanding riffs and hasty vocals. The song grows darker and thicker as it moves along, a feature that I am now fully noticing on the album. "Sanctum Regnum" closes the album. It's another slow-moving song with tones of despair in the music, and rage in the vocals. Overall, this was a solid album that didn't feature some of the moldy techniques of the FWOBM movement. As I mentioned, perhaps the best part was the balance between hopeless tones, and angry tones. These two features created a sound that was somewhat traditional, but moreso modern.
