DeathAssault
DeathAssault

I really don't know what to make of the Devonian Thrash Metal/Hardcore band DEATHASSAULT. Yes, they hail from Plymouth in South West England. The five years of their existence have passed me by without me noticing them before, so I haven't had the pleasure of listening to their 2022 single "Kill", nor their 2023 EP "A Time After Time". This makes the debut album "DeathAssault" (that was released on Friday 13 February 2026) my first time undergoing their brand of Metal torture.
As to why I can't make head nor tails of the music of DEATHASSAULT is due to the eclectic and erratic nature of the songs that fill the 49 minutes of mixing hardcore with Thrash Metal. It's all jumping all over the place, and to me it sounds like it's just done at random. Well, at least their description of the music they play is accurate. Plus I always find myself asking what and how is making the vocalist so extremely angry that he makes every word he shouts as a direct hit on the person in question. It could be that it is, but I can't corroborate that, so I shouldn't imply it either. But let's just say that Darrell Baker does use a convincing and menacing intensity in his voice on "DeathAssault". What I do know is that when the band tones it down a bit, even becomes a bit of emotional in their approach, they sound a lot more intense and sincere. When the singer then puts on his clean vocals, you feel that you have entered a whole other world.
The sound is for the majority of the time really angry. That is not a problem, as long as the band doesn't forget to use their musical abilities. And thankfully DEATHASSAULT doesn't. The band doesn't just go for broke, but is able to give us some good written songs. Not all the time, but most of the time. That puts them ahead of other bands that feel the need to sound so angry that I feel they're just making noise to be heard. At least "DeathAssault" is filled with music, even though it is excessively angry in emotion. It's not rocking my world at all, but I do understand why especially the youth of today is leaning towards this kind of music. It allows them to express all their frustrations and/or shed their negative thoughts and feelings while listening to it at home, but even more in a live setting, when they really can go to town.
