The Entity

Death SS

The Italian veterans of Horror Rock is back with another great release.

The more you research about the past of a Metal scene, the more you’ll be surprised. And one feature is interesting: it’s obvious that one can think that during a successful commercial praise of a band (or set of bands) of a country that nothing came before. As a fine example, one can think that Italian Metal scene only came after the success of RHAPSODY OF FIRE on the second half of the 90s - that unleashed an invasion of Heavy/Power Metal acts from the country - but before them, many acts set the foundations of Italian Metal scene, and one of these veterans is DEATH SS, here for another round with “The Entity”, their 11th full-length.

Steve Sylvester (the band’s singer and sole founding member left, and the SS os the band's name come from his name) signs the production, with Tom Dalgety sharing with him such duty (and he did the mixing as well), with Freddy Delirio (the quintet’s keyboardist) doing the recordings and Robin Schmidt taking care of the mastering. It’s obvious that the band chose a defined and understandable sonority with a touch of modernity (due the techs used on studio), but with a clear aggressive sense. It’s a very good work, indeed. The band works on a way that can be said as Heavy Metal, but plenty of Hard Rock and Rock ‘n’ Roll elements, being heavy and aggressive (with a weighty work on bass guitar and drums for supporting such aspect), but with catching melodies and ambiences (where guitars and keyboards do their job in a high level of quality). And a touch of horror-like elements to turn things interesting. It’s full of life, catching and energetic, and shows how these veterans still have a lot to offer.

“Ave Adonai”, “Justified Sinner”, “Possession”, “Dr. Jekyll & Sister Hyde”, “Two Souls”, “Out to Get Me”, “Hell is Revealed”, “Love Until Death”, “The Whitechapel Wolf”, “The Evil Painter”, “Cimiteria” and “Evil Never Dies” are offerings full of energy and careful melodies, but be sure of one thing: the quintet isn’t living off its past, but sounds relevant and still able to deliver to new generations great songs.

“The Entity” is a charming release, and shows that even after almost 50 years DEATH SS is still as surprising fans as they always were.
