Deadspeak - Dissolve The Dreams album cover

Hailing from the Netherlands, the land of windmills and clogs, DEADSPEAK hail. "Dissolve The Dreams" represents the latest effort for the thrashened death metal act. Will they cause me to be windmilling along too? "Knee Deep" opens up the album. I'm drawn to Jasper's heavy vocals whilst still being able to maintain a respectable level of enunciation and diction. The guitar is also prominent. Nothing fancy, just straight up thrash grooves! I do wonder if this is perhaps too prominent and overpowering in the mix. My suspicions are confirmed with "Death Shall Rise". Whilst its admirable that the level of technicality has been increased, it is sadly too overpowering, to the point where the rhythm section are beginning to be drowned out. Which is a shame, as I really admire that thrash laden groove and intensity being set!

Perhaps the highlight of the album for me is in "Evil Dead". Jasper clearly has some talented chops, and demonstrates this with the opening riff. That guitar solo soars elegantly, and would make Kerry King blush! The song title is repeated throughout, which I think would make it a very audience effective song for when they play this live. With this being said, I did some digging into the band's history and to find out more information about this album. It turns out that this actually a cover of genre pioneers DEATH. If I'm honest, I would have preferred EVIL DEAD to have been a little more explicit about this and make it clear that they're covering another band. The band cite MORBID ANGEL as a key influence. I think this is most clear in the album's title track, "Dissolve The Dream". The song is filled with the kind of hypnotic grooves and soaring guitar leads you'd associate with the Florida based legends.

The final song, "Gatling" is also the longest of the album. I can see a variety of tempo changes in this song. Whether it's a thrashened assault with tremolo picking and blast beats, or more of the MORBID ANGEL style grooves similar to the previous song, the diversity is welcomed and makes for a very rounded song. Then sadly, the album's over! Sadly because I was beginning to really get into it! There are some production issues, especially with the levels and mixing, but this can be easily addressed. The overall production does sound raw and gritty, perhaps needing to be polished up slightly. Although this may have been done for deliberate effect. However, it's definitely left me hanging on and wanting to see more from the band! A strong showing.
