Dead Will Walk - A New Day of Dawning album cover

Formed in 2013, this death metal trio hails from Drenthe in the Netherlands and up to this date has produced one split album with the band ENTRAPMENT along with two EP's. The first debut from the band was the split album and was released under Cavernous Records in 2017. Later in 2017 they put out their first EP, a four track session titled Unleash the Dead. Moving ahead to 2023 we receive the second EP, a six track recording that came out under the label Dawnbreed Records called A New Day of Dawning. Also new out this year is a compilation of their previous releases titled As the Bowel Withers, which features the band's old and new material.

The album opens with "Raise the Horde" which is an aggression fueled ride into the depths. The vocals along with playing the drums is no easy feat and it is impressive how well it is pulled off, recording or not. The track itself is a chunky riff led song that maintains an above average tempo. A solid track to open the album and build upon. "Night Screams" is a punk/hardcore style track that never lets up from start to end. The bass is a rumbling beast and the vocals have a dirty howl to match. A mid tempo drawn out single chord riff helps open the song up between sections. "Concrete Wombs" is a top song on the release for me as the variation within the music itself keeps you actively following along. Catchy rhythms and some heavy guitar and bass to bang your head to.

You can get a sense that the band could pull off a sludgy and dirty sound at ease and you get that in the first thirty or so seconds on the track "From Moving Grounds". The song eventually evolves to a speed demon with some demolishing drum work. The last two songs are once again pretty catchy tracks with the music that feature blistering picks and pounding snare drum with some notes that ring out, all the while setting up a return of a frantic pace. This release could easily have fit into the late 90's, early 2000's hardcore New York scene while having a little more sinister edge to not only the music but the vocals. The guitars bring everything from a 80's BLACK SABBATH, to black metal and even some doom elements, but mainly a no smoke and mirrors release. The drums on the recording have a live in the jam studio sound that resembles to me a dirty, fast punk inspired touch. Not going to knock your socks off but at just over twenty minutes, worth the time.
